Chinese

This course will guide international students to broaden their cultural horizons of the Chinese language, understand the cultural functions of the Chinese language, and the Chinese cultural spirit contained in Chinese characters, Chinese words and even Chinese grammar, and observe and understand the cultural characteristics and cultural environment of Chinese society from the perspective of Chinese language phenomena.

Through watching Chinese films, the students would learn Chinese culture, understand Chinese society and enhance their Chinese language (advanced Chinese level).

This course uses a thematic approach to select relevant original texts from the Confucian classics (including the Four Books, the Five Classics, the Analects of Confucius, and Mencius, and when necessary, the broader classics - the Thirteen Classics). The course aims to gain an appreciation for the beauty of Chinese characters and a deeper understanding of Confucianism and Chinese culture through reading these works.  

This course is for international students who already have a certain level of Chinese proficiency but whose grasp of grammar knowledge is relatively vague and confusing. It will systematically sort out the main grammatical key points and difficulties in Chinese, so that students can better master Chinese grammar and use Chinese more accurately; at the same time, it will also serve as a guide for future students. This is a professional courses to lay a certain theoretical foundation of grammar.

This course teaches ancient Chinese classic texts, common vocabulary, common grammar and ancient Chinese knowledge.

This course is a beginners’ reading and writing course in Putonghua, focusing on acquiring elementary level vocabulary and grammar. Students are introduced to the romanization system of Putonghua (Pinyin) and the Chinese writing system (Chinese characters). Content covered in the course is based on daily situations. 

This is a comprehensive language skill training course that focuses on practical and functional Chinese, including speaking, writing, and listening. The oral training is arranged step by step from easy to difficult levels with well-designed exercises in vivid and interactive forms. Students who take this course are expected to achieve the following goals by the end of this semester: (1) Learn a vocabulary of 250 words. (2) Achieve 26 grammar points. (3) Be able to communicate with 33 useful expressions.

Designed to build on Chinese I, this course is intended for the students who got at least grade D in Chinese I, or who are on a same level of language skills. This course develops the four basic Chinese language skills that learned in Chinese I: Speaking, Listening, Reading, Writing.

This taster course focuses on helping students engage in basic daily social interaction using Cantonese.

This taster course is for international students who are interested in studying Putonghua. Students will be systematically introduced to Chinese characters (formation, history, stroke orders, etc.). Additionally, students will have a chance to learn some basic daily conversations in Putonghua.
