Adding study abroad to the college experience prepares undergraduate students to thrive in increasingly global workplaces—and your department can lead the way with a $3,000 grant. The University of California Education Abroad Program (UCEAP) offers up to 10 grants to UC academic departments ready to break down barriers to international education.
Goal
The grant’s goal is to fund efforts to better integrate study abroad into UC curricula and remove academic barriers to international education for UC undergraduate students. Preference is given to proposals based on the projected impact on UC undergraduates.

The UCEAP Academic Integration Grant has enabled UCSB Economics, one of the campus’s largest departments, to streamline study abroad processes. With this support, we have maintained an extensive pre-approved course database, hired a dedicated EAP peer advisor, and hosted quarterly information sessions for Economics and Economics & Accounting students. The peer advisor has been instrumental in managing advising appointments, maintaining the database, and supporting outreach, significantly reducing advising workload. In collaboration with a faculty co-lead, we have also improved the efficiency of syllabus review, resulting in faster determinations of course applicability toward the major.

Previous Grant Projects
In addition to the required deliverables, past grant projects have:
- Hosted information sessions about studying abroad in the major.
- Published print materials and/or posted videos on the value of study abroad relative to the major.
- Hired study abroad peer advisors to counsel students.
Our project focused on reducing bureaucratic barriers and expanding access to study abroad opportunities in Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking countries. We revised study abroad policies and major requirements to increase flexibility in fulfilling elective requirements abroad. Grant support also enabled comprehensive review of courses for major, minor, and lower-division language credit. Most importantly, our updated website has become an invaluable planning and advising resource, with student testimonials proving especially engaging.
