Course Description

Since January 1993, Ciudad Juárez has stood out for the high number of murdered women. It is at the beginning of this decade and in this city that the term "femicide" is generated: the violent death of women due to machismo or misogyny. Through different texts and media students investigate different aspects of this issue, as well as terminology, machismo, the economy, and drug trafficking in Mexico.

Course Description
The seminar considers the historic place of feminism in Latin America alongside modern Latin American masculinity and alternative manifestations of patriarchy. It provides a history and critical historiography of feminisms and masculinities studies and questions the universal neutral and sexless subject. The course also looks at processes of gender relations, "depatriarchalization", soft patriarchies, and the intersection of patriarchies.

Course Description
This course provides a study of the colonial economy of Chile through an examination of agricultural and mining development in the Metropolitan and Aconcagua regions during the 16th through 18th centuries. The course includes a map building workshop to research indigenous and Hispanic property in the Santiago region during the 16th century as well as a field visits to agricultural sectors in the metropolitan region.

Course Description

This course examines the Asian diaspora in Latin America. It explores issues of immigration and cultural hybridity as related to descendants and national identity. This course discusses the intertwined relationships among power, representation, and cultural production. It engages visual culture, popular culture and film, and other media, as a means to underscore the role that cultural production has played in transforming, adapting, and sustaining normative ideas regarding ethnicity, gender, and sexuality in relation to citizenship.

This course provides a study of pre-Hispanic literature, examining the Nahuatl and Mayan cultures and their respective literatures. Course Description

This course studies the great Latin American figures from cultural and political history. The course is conducted in Spanish and French with an emphasis on translating and transcribing texts between both languages. The course focuses on how heroes stand between myth and reality, and how they relate to the individual and the collective. It analyzes the processes of heroization carried out since the Latin American independences to highlight the ruptures and continuities in their contemporary political uses.  Written sources, territorial marks, and iconography constitute the main materials used to approach heroic cults from a critical perspective.

Course Description
This class covers the history of social and political thought in Latin America from the 19th century to the present. It examines history of Latin American thought of the 19th century through the main trends represented in Latin American liberalism and positivism, which concludes in the ideological and political confrontation between Latin Americanism and Pan-Americanism. The course discusses the theoretical, political and ideological constructions of Latin American thought during the 20th century and considers the regional debate on the alternatives and paths of new Latin American critical thinking in the 21st century.

Course Description
This seminar provides an introduction to contemporary Latin American politics. First, a general panorama of the historical trends is presented with a focus on the regional's problems of democratization during the last century. Second, it concentrates on the public regional agenda to study different topics like the violence, the crisis of the welfare state, the crisis of political representation, the populism phenomenon and the risks of an authoritarian regression in the continent.
