Fields of Study: Science, Engineering
Computer programming and data science are desirable skills in the job market. Python is one of the top programming languages in the world and there is high demand across many fields for individuals who can organize and analyze large amounts of data. Spend your summer learning the basics of data science and Python programming language in Spain's capital city. You will even have the opportunity to visit a local startup to see how they use data science in real time.
Unique Study Opportunities
- Visit or attend a lab session at a local startup site.
- Develop in-demand tools and skills in computing.
- Apply computational and inferential thinking to address real-world problems.

Requirements While Abroad
To successfully complete this program:
- Take two courses for a total of 10 quarter/6.6 semester UC units.
- Letter grade required for both courses. The pass/no pass grading option is not available on this program.
Current Program Courses
- Introduction to Data Science (5.0 quarter/3.3 semester UC units, lower division)
This course offers an introduction to the principles and foundations of data science. Students gain in-depth knowledge of the different techniques used for data collection and data analysis.
Subject Area: Computer Science - Python Programming (5.0 quarter/3.3 semester UC units, lower division)
This course offers an introduction to students with no previous programming knowledge to the fundamental principles and concepts of computers and programming with the programming language Python.
Subject Area: Computer Science
Visiting a Local Start-up
As part of the Introduction to Data Science course, you will visit a local start-up to see how data science is used in their work. Over the next few weeks of the program, you will collaborate with the start-up to design a data collection and analysis project, the results of which will be submitted as the final project in the course.
Additional or optional coursework, internships, and research for academic credit are not possible on this program.

Academic Culture
The intensity of this program requires active participation to maintain the pace. To avoid falling behind and to succeed up to the final weeks of the program, attend all classes and complete all assignments.
You will be in class with other UC students. Regular classes are typically held Monday through Thursday until 4 pm. Additional activities are scheduled on some weekends.
Attendance and class participation are required. You are allowed a total of two absences during the program. If you miss any portion of a class, you may be marked as absent or late, upon the faculty member’s discretion. Three tardies automatically convert to an absence. You will be allowed to make-up examinations in case of an excused absence due to illness, university approved activities, and major emergencies upon presentation of documentation to the instructor.
Grades
You will earn direct UC credit and grades for all coursework. Grades for this program are usually available in October. They may not arrive in time to accommodate the summer degree verification deadline.
