As a transfer student, I wasn’t sure if I could participate in a study abroad program during my short time at UC Berkeley. However, after signing up for the Peace Corps Preparation program offered through UCEAP, I learned that all students, including transfer students, are encouraged to go abroad. This is what motivated me to participate in the study abroad program during summer break. While I did have a choice to participate in an academic study abroad program, I chose the global internship program instead as I considered this an excellent opportunity to get my first internship experience, all the while fulfilling one of the PeaceCorps preparation requirements. When I looked through all the global internship options, South Africa, particularly, caught my attention the most as I have never been to the country or the African continent. Fulfilling the Peace Corps Prep program requirements, getting my first internship experience, and visiting a country and the region I had never visited before; everything aligned perfectly, and this was how I decided to participate in the global internship program in Cape Town, South Africa.
