Taking classes relating to my major and seeing them through an authentic Danish lens, among a culturally diverse group of students from around the world, was invaluable -- this certainly granted me a new global perspective and allowed me to learn a great deal about Danish culture and customs. In my application for this scholarship, I stated that my main academic goal was to broaden my knowledge of history and sociology, as one cannot develop a full understanding of global conflict, globalization, or world history without juxtaposing unique perspectives. The University of Copenhagen course Gender, Sexuality, and Social Life most notably aligned with my academic goals, as its curriculum focused on relevant global and Scandinavian issues in the field of gender studies. This class was especially memorable, as while Denmark is commonly idealized as a perfect nation that works for the people and strives to quash inequality in all forms, the anecdotal accounts of the Danish students proved that even Denmark has room to improve, as its relative ethnic homogeneity can be stifling.
