I’ve become more confident in and developed a fondness for visual storytelling. I was inspired to create personal YouTube videos during my time abroad. I have since gained 200 subscribers and over 18,000 views on my channel. Though it is currently a hobby, I hope to keep applying the skills and strategies I learned in creating all kinds of videos. Professionally, I had a few revelations through this internship. First, I truly thrive in a creative role. Whether it is through making videos or simply being surrounded by art, I recognized my desire to pursue a career that embraces art, creativity, and connection. I used to deny this about myself — I had a trend of picking jobs in arts-appreciation (a theater, an art gallery, and now a museum), but I would simultaneously tell myself that I wanted a future in a more “practical” field. While I’m not set on any specific path, I am drawn towards roles that utilize media to document/share culture and art. I can see myself producing programs about traditional crafts and artisanship on NHK World or working in a national museum in Japan, where I have personal roots.
