Arabic

This course is part of the Laurea Magistrale degree program and is intended for advanced level students. Enrollment is by permission of the instructor. This course is open to students coming from different faculties and curricula. Students may attend this course after completion of the previous first level and familiarization with Arabic sounds and script. The second level course focuses on spoken Levantine Arabic, Beirut variety. Students become better acquainted with spoken Arabic and culture-specific topics and concepts, focusing on possible fields for intercultural negotiation, while keeping in tact culture specificities and differences.

This course addresses:
-Spoken Language: additional study of the Levantine variety (Beirut); twin formulae from the Egyptian variety (Cairo) for introducing oneself and greetings.

-Chunks, collocations, and formulae: additional collocations and chunks, considered useful for the diplomatic-administrative sphere; isolated lexicon and elementary but culturally significant formulae are presented. At this stage, students are invited to simply memorize a number chunks-collocations-formulae.

This is part two of a two-semester sequence covering elementary Egyptian colloquial Arabic. This course introduces the spoken Arabic of Cairo (Egyptian Colloquial Arabic, ECA). It concentrates on enabling students to communicate effectively in daily life using high-frequency vocabulary, basic sentence patterns, and pronunciation-focused practice. The course emphasizes listening and speaking skills, supported by guided reading and writing tasks. Intercultural learning is integrated throughout the course through guided noticing, comparison, and reflection. Students complete structured mini-tasks that connect classroom language to real-life interaction in Cairo and document what they observe, hear, and say in everyday contexts. 
 

This course studies the basic inflectional and syntactical patterns of Egyptian colloquial Arabic through every day-life communicative activities. It prepares students to identify the general topics and some basic information in both very familiar and everyday topics; perform orally in simple social situations encountered in daily life; manage many everyday requirements of independent living; demonstrate an understanding of social and cultural expectations through the appropriate use of greetings, titles, and common cultural phrases; present information on both familiar and everyday topics using a variety of practiced and memorized words, phrases, and simple sentences; order food and ask about prices using numbers. Although speaking and listening are the dominant skills in this course, reading and writing are also integrated in minimal proportions as helping skills. This is part one of a two-semester sequence covering elementary Egyptian colloquial Arabic. 

This course is designed for students to communicate effectively in the Jordanian dialect. The course introduces students to words, expressions, and structures used frequently in everyday life. It also introduces students to the Jordanian culture and how to communicate with locals. The course develops skills to distinguish the fundamental grammatical structure of colloquial Arabic from that of Modern Standard Arabic; express themselves on all aspects of daily life in colloquial dialect, and understand native speakers themselves on these same subjects; recognize different accents of Jordanian colloquial dialect; demonstrate appropriate cultural inferences. The course emphasizes a communication-based method of instruction. Students are expected to be active learners, coming to class prepared to activate vocabulary and grammar through group activities. Instead of lecturing, instructors primarily facilitate these communication-based activities and guide student learning.

This intermediate Egyptian Colloquial Arabic course develops listening and speaking skills in daily life situations through activities and presentations as well as introducing cultural connotations. It introduces students to the spoken Arabic of Cairo and concentrates on enabling students to communicate effectively in daily life. It targets high-frequency vocabulary and social situations and emphasizes pronunciation.
 

This elementary course develops the fundamentals of modern standard Arabic through reading, writing, and oral connection within a framework of the essentials of syntax, morphology, and a working vocabulary. This course is the first part of a three-semester sequence of elementary Modern Standard Arabic.

This course offers a study of selected topics in advanced Egyptian Colloquial Arabic. It introduces students to the spoken Arabic of Cairo and concentrates on enabling students to communicate effectively in daily life. It targets high-frequency vocabulary and social situations and emphasizes pronunciation.

This intermediate Arabic course increases the command of grammatical and syntactical structure of modern standard Arabic through reading materials, and develops reading and writing skills and comprehension. It offers a critical examination of social and cultural dimensions of reading materials. This is the first course in a three-semester sequence of Intermediate Arabic.
