Cantonese

This Cantonese course is for students with Chinese language background who are beginners in the learning of Cantonese. It equips students with the Cantonese proficiency and communication competence necessary for living and networking in Hong Kong as well as a fast integration into the local culture. The learning activities involve developing listening and speaking skills in an attempt to build confidence and fluency in using Cantonese for daily communication.

This is an advanced Cantonese language course focused on building up listening ability in professional context and presenting students with multi-media authentic materials. Topics for discussion include various local and international news and issues related to our society, such as education system,economy and immigration. This class teaches listening to Cantonese in a professional setting. Each week, the class listens to a Cantonese news video and breaks down the vocabulary and discusses the video. It is the highest level of Cantonese in CUHK, with most students fluent in the Romanized words of Cantonese. There are weekly quizzes and a midterm and final.

This intermediate Cantonese language course is for Mandarin speakers. Each lesson is centered on the topic and consists of a number of dialogues or short talks. The content is a socially oriented topic that revolves around the various aspects of Hong Kong society and people's livelihood. The same situational dialogue and conversational exercises expand the learner's vocabulary range, and further improve the pronunciation through the analysis of difficult speech points, so as to seek new knowledge. Let learners have more opportunities to apply Cantonese in life and study.

This is an advanced Cantonese language course designed to further improve fluency in professional communication settings through language activities, role playing and discussion practice. Topics for discussion include various China news and issues related to the Chinese society, such as education system, economy and immigration.

This course explores the characteristics of modern Chinese literature and helps students to master the basic methodology and skills of analyzing the literary works of various genres of this period. Students analyze selected readings of the representative works of renowned modern Chinese writers.

This course provides an introduction to the historical background, genres, significant writers and texts of Taiwan Literature. The course covers Taiwan literature from artistic, political, and cultural perspectives, and considers the methodologies of literary criticism by reading selected texts of Taiwan literature.

This course introduces the origins, characteristics, achievements and development of Chinese literature from Pre-Qin to the Tang dynasty. Students gain a more comprehensive understanding of the history of Chinese literature.

This advanced Cantonese course for students who speak Chinese (Putonghua). The course equips students with various advanced communicative skills in various academic and professional settings, such as seminars, meetings, group discussions, debate, presentations, performance, impromptu speaking etc. Students are trained to speak in connected discourse in academic and professional settings with different level of formality.
