Course Description
Analytical feminist philosophy has established itself in recent decades as an independent academic discipline. Both in philosophy and in feminist theory, feminist philosophy has provided new food for thought. This seminar introduces this relatively new field and provides the opportunity to better understand and use traditional analytical methods in a socio-critical way. The seminar examines current work in feminist analytical philosophy that addresses socio-critical issues. The course covers texts from different areas of analytic philosophy, such as philosophy of language, epistemology, ontology, and ethics. Students discuss how traditional analytical methods can be applied to illuminate and criticize methodology, identity, gender and race, ideology, oppression, etc. Texts by Kristie Dotson, Mari Mikkola, Sally Haslanger, Elizabeth Anderson, Charles Mills, Thalia Mae Bettcher and Elizabeth Barnes are all covered. The seminar language is German, but as the recent debate on analytical feminist philosophy is primarily in English, the seminar requires the ability to read challenging texts in English.

Course Description
Aside from the joy that they offer us, festivals and communal rituals give meaning, rhythm, and identity in community life. This is especially visible in the case of religious communities. This seminar reviews this phenomenon by studying the case of Islamic festivals and rituals in Africa. It studies their historical evolution in the “longue durée” and their impact on the life of today's global modernity.

Course Description
As a central paradigm of pictorial representation, the linear perspective in art history is closely linked to mimetic conventions of representation and classical pictorial concepts. Their departure on the path to abstraction and non-objectivity in modern art was often accompanied by a critique of the linear perspective, which questioned the normativity of spatial vision and the postulate of a sovereign subject. However, if one shifts attention from the perspective-constructed image to the processes of perspective construction, perspective proves to be a transformative medium in which indefiniteness and unavailability are already structurally inscribed. The lecture explores the question of how Leonardo's conceptualization of perspective sheds another light on perspective-critical positions of art from modernism to the 1970s. Based on Marcel Duchamp's intensive examination of the perspective literature of the early modern period, it explores the transformative and intermediate potentials which perspective also offered to the critics of mimesis and illusion.

Course Description

This course for foreign students is designed to improve students’ language skills and vocabulary. Areas of focus include grammar, conversation, writing exercises, and listening and reading exercises. In addition, excursions are planned to introduce students to German culture. Students work with cultural and historical topics on an academic level and broaden their intercultural knowledge. They are introduced to independent learning methods and familiarize themselves with typical learning situations at German universities. In this class at the B2 level according to the CEFR, students further develop their (often subject-specific) vocabulary and command of grammatical structures as well as corresponding competencies in university-specific situations. The class takes intercultural and methodological aspects of foreign language learning into consideration, and students discuss specific aspects of German culture and society. The B2 level is split into two courses, the B2.1 course covers the first half of the level and the B2.2 course covers the second half of the level.

Course Description
This course approaches the history of the institutionalization of the age cohort in a transnational perspective. The age cohort is a grouping form in which bureaucratic guidelines sort students into grades according to their age. The course covers other grouping forms such as denomination and gender, in addition to subject-specific ways of sorting, which group students according to their level of performance. The implications of age grouping are discussed along with the resulting forms of measurement, sorting, and selection which tend to move towards homogenization. The institutionalization process is analyzed in its regional, national, and transnational dimensions, using the United States as an example of an early adopter of the age group. As part of this, different types of sources –primarily statistics and text documents– are taken into account.
