The course explores genders and sexual diversity in the modern society. Students discuss and investigate challenges in international politics, economics that different gender groups including, men, women, and LGBTQ face as the world becomes globalized. Course Description

This course examines the historical and contemporary oppression of women through a global and comparative lens. It explores the use of witchcraft accusations in European, American, and African contexts as a means of suppressing assertive or powerful women, as well as other gendered practices such as foot binding, sati, and female genital mutilation. The course introduces key concepts of gender, sex, and patriarchy, analyzes the marginalization of women in patriarchal societies, and examines women’s rights in the contemporary world. Attention is given to differing understandings and enforcement of women’s rights at national and global levels, including the roles of international organizations such as the United Nations and the International Labor Organization, and extends the discussion of gender rights to include LGBTQ+ communities.

Course Description

This course explores traditional psychological explanations of pro-social and anti-social behavior as well as more recent research findings in the field. Various psychological approaches to pro- and anti-social behavior are considered, including evolutionary and biological perspectives, learning and social-learning perspectives, cognitive-emotional perspectives, cultural and cross-cultural perspectives, and psychodynamic perspectives. Students learn about various theoretical explanations of pro-social and anti-social behavior, including catharsis, deindividuation, the development of empathy, personality factors, the influence of media and other environmental factors. Strategies to increase pro-social behavior and reduce and control anti-social behavior are evaluated. Students develop a more sophisticated understanding of the field of pro-social and anti-social behavior and critically evaluate variables influencing pro-social behavior and anti-social behavior.

This course focuses on the psychology of emotional well-being as well as strategies on how the study of emotion can be applied to different domains of life. It discusses various concepts related to emotional well-being from different psychological perspectives, developing a deeper understanding of the positive and negative emotions experienced by human beings and analyze their causes and effects on well-being. It explores the various models of emotion and critically analyzes their merits and limitations, as well as their practical application. It explores various classic theories such as Basic Emotion Theory, Social Constructivist Theory, Cognitive Appraisal Theory, and the RULER Model of Emotion Intelligence.
