This course enables critical analysis and interpretation of ecological data from diverse sources to clearly explain the complex interactions between anthropogenic, climatic, and geologic drivers of change and their impacts on ecosystems and human populations across multiple spatial and temporal scales. In addition, the course fosters ethical and responsible behaviors by emphasizing safety and the minimization of ecological impact during environmental learning activities.

This is an elective course on entomology. This course exposes students to general concepts of entomology and the biology of insects. It covers insect biology, anatomy, physiology, classification, behavior, ecology, plant-insect interactions, insect and human society, and methods in entomology. This course examines the historical and contemporary oppression of women through a global and comparative lens. It explores the use of witchcraft accusations in European, American, and African contexts as a means of suppressing assertive or powerful women, as well as other gendered practices such as foot binding, sati, and female genital mutilation. The course introduces key concepts of gender, sex, and patriarchy, analyzes the marginalization of women in patriarchal societies, and examines women’s rights in the contemporary world. Attention is given to differing understandings and enforcement of women’s rights at national and global levels, including the roles of international organizations such as the United Nations and the International Labor Organization, and extends the discussion of gender rights to include LGBTQ+ communities.

Drawing on principles from positive psychology, including the PERMA model, the course explores positive emotions, engagement and flow, relationships, meaning, and achievement. Emphasis is placed on applying research findings through an individual well-being project that supports personal development and thriving.
