This course offers a study of the growth of the United States from the colonial era to the present. Topics include: British colonialism; development of slave-based agriculture; western expansion; American system of manufacture; cyclical instability and depression; distribution of income. Pre-requisites: ECON 101 and 102

This course examines the socio-economic, biological, and technical aspects of forestry within the international frame, in both the developed and developing world. It discusses the various regions of the world and the role of national and international agencies.

This course examines industrial organization (IO), which is a subfield of micro-economics, to study the behavior of firms and market structure especially focusing on imperfectly competitive markets. Students analyze how firms behave in different market structures and how the behavior of firms affects the outcome of the economy. Most lectures are theoretical and focus on formal analysis rather than case studies. The course makes heavy use of game theory and uses basic calculus and statistics to solve the maximization problem in various situations.

This course offers a place-based exploration of the multiple, complex, and contested ways urban Indigeneity is constituted in Canada today. Students explore ways in which to facilitate and translate community perspectives and parameters into communicative framework or object. Students critically engage with settler colonial constructions of indigeneity, with attention to how such narratives continue to be expressed today. These issues are examined from interdisciplinary and comparative perspectives drawing on material from the fields of Indigenous studies, political science, history, cultural geography, gender, race, sexuality and social justice, planning, and art and architecture. The course consists of lectures, guest speakers, seminars, class discussions, and student presentations. Students are required to participate in one or more community event outside of class time. This course requires students to have completed a minimum of two years of university level instruction as a prerequisite.

This course offers an introduction to research on social interaction with an emphasis on group (as opposed to individual) processes and behavior. Topics include: status, power, and prestige; distributive justice, marginality, and social control; authority relations; group structure and membership. This course examines topics in the context of a variety of groups--families, formal organizations, communities, and friendship groups--and cultures.

This course is an introduction to Indigenous issues in Canada and abroad from a sociological perspective. Topics include definitions of Indigenous identity, Indigenous ways of knowing, food sovereignty, treaty rights, citizenship, self-determination, reconciliation, and resurgence. The course addresses the development of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples and its consequences for Aboriginal peoples in Canada and internationally. The course emphasizes the distinctiveness of Indigenous worldviews and the challenges Indigenous peoples face when they are required to defend and their rights and ways of life in contemporary social, legal, and political contexts.

This course offers a multi-disciplinary study of sexuality, including lesbian, gay, bisexual, heterosexual, and transgender issues and related topics.
