Course Description

This is the second of a three-module course on qualitative research methods. This module builds on what students have learned in part I and is designed to guide them through the steps of data collection for their qualitative study. Students work on gaining access to their research site and begin the interview process and/or their observations and conversations with their research participants as participant observers. Students are introduced to the process of transcribing the interviews, coding the data, and memo writing. All three steps are part of qualitative data analysis. As students develop their research projects, they are challenged to link their specific research questions to larger processes and forces. They also are asked to consider who might find their research useful and how the results of their investigations might be utilized to promote social change. In-depth analysis of the intricacies underlying contemporary social, cultural, and political discourses and practices, provides the basis for good social research. This is a time and labor-intensive skills training, especially once data collection has begun. Most of the required work occurs outside of the class setting. Students are expected to work independently and should count on having to invest an extra two to four hours per week in interviewing, transcribing the interviews, and working on the data collection.

Course Description
International organizations represent one of the most curious phenomena of twentieth century world politics. Not only did their numbers increase at a startling rate during that time, they also proliferated geographically and became active in virtually every policy area relevant to global governance. They are now one of the most important aspects of world politics, and yet they are also one of the least understood by the citizens they serve. Recent years have seen a decline in the rate of new international and regional organizations being created, and existing ones such as the International Criminal Court (ICC) are in danger of losing legitimacy as member states threaten to leave them. Instead of formal, treaty-based bureaucratic bodies, states are increasingly relying on regular summits and meetings. This course introduces students to both long-standing and contemporary debates about international organizations. Specifically, it covers conceptualizations of their role in world politics, their activities in and relevance to various policy areas, as well as their institutional design and pathologies. In doing so, the course takes a truly global perspective, covering not just the usual big names such as the United Nations and World Bank, but also regional organizations such as the African Union, which are limited to specific regions of the world and whose activities may challenge standard theories of World Politics.

Course Description

Given the continuously growing impact of the European Union on business, attention to politics is warranted in international business studies. At the same time, governance in the EU is far from straightforward, as it is based on a very complex mixture of political principles, structures, and institutions. This course looks at the wider institutional environment of the firm and provides background for doing business in Europe.  This course is a good option for students aspiring to work for non-governmental organizations (NGOs) or business practitioners in Europe. A creative, multidisciplinary approach is taken, using original and challenging literature from the literature on international business, comparative politics, and comparative economic systems. The course material assists in understanding past and current changes in the broader European business & politics landscape.

Course Description
The purpose of this course is to shed light on the Middle East region and discuss its historical, economic, social, and most importantly political realities. This course investigates the past and the present of the region. In the beginning, the course introduces the concept of Middle East, not only as a geographical place but also a cultural, contextual, discursive, and political concept. Then the course covers the history of the region and its ongoing effect on the current developments. In this context, major events, ideas, issues, (external and internal) actors and political movements that have been shaping the Middle East are introduced. In the remaining time, specific and contemporary issues such as interventions in the twenty-first century, Arab Spring, Syrian civil war and rising rivalries between regional powers are introduced and critically analyzed. Prerequisites for this course are a course in International Relations and World History.

Full course description

Cognitive neuroscience is an entirely new research field that originally emerged from a combination of traditional sciences such as philosophy, psychology, medicine and biology that all investigate the principles of perception, behaviour and cognition from different perspectives.

As technical developments of different methods and tools in the field of cognitive neuroscience came forth, and as theoretical application of different mathematical and computer science-based models were used to explain neuronal functioning, additional disciplines, such as physics, mathematics, bioengineering and computer science materialized as an important part of this research field.

Subsequently, an effective research project in cognitive neuroscience requires an interdisciplinary cooperation, in which each scientific discipline contributes its respective genuine theories, models, techniques and tools for the mutual investigation of the neuronal principles of perception, attention, and cognition.

But can we really watch the brain at work? Are there ways to identify where exactly, and when exactly activation in the brain is necessary to perform a specific mental process? This course will help to give some answers on the basic principles of brain research and it will show relevant applications of these techniques in different areas of cognitive psychology.

Course objectives

  • To give an introduction into the new field of cognitive neuroscience.
  • To learn which methods a brain researcher can use to investigate the neuronal bases of different mental processes.

Prerequisites

SCI2034 Brain and Action and elementary knowledge of electricity and magnetism as stated under SCI-P(p. vi-viii).

Course Description
The course focuses on bio-interactions between invertebrates (arthropods, nematodes), micro-organisms and plants, and beneficial organisms and pathogens and their hosts in natural and agro-ecosystems. The major themes covered in the lectures include biodiversity, interaction and communication between organisms (including different trophic levels), fundamental mechanisms underlying bio-interactions, and ecosystem services. Students concentrate on intraspecific and interspecific interactions and apply this knowledge to explore, monitor, and evaluate agro-ecosystem management strategies using biodiversity principles, often referred to as functional biodiversity. After successful completion of this course, students are able to understand and predict the responses and interactions of individual organisms, communities, and ecosystems; explore, develop, and evaluate management strategies and practices that enable and ensure the sustainable use of natural resources and conservation of biodiversity; manage the interactions between crops, (parasitic) weeds, insects, bacteria, fungi, viruses, and nematodes at different trophic levels; strengthen the inherent quality of agro-ecosystems in preventing pest and disease development by using genetic control, cultural control, biological control, and other biorational options; and execute a research project.

Course Description
The main focus of this course is on factors (etiology) and mechanisms (pathogenesis) that contribute to the development and continuation of developmental psychopathological disorders of children and adolescents. Additionally, attention is given to macro- and micro-paradigms of developmental psychopathology as well as other developmental models. Emphasis is on the complex interaction between social, cognitive, behavioral, and societal factors involved in the development of these disorders. Additionally, problem behaviors that are not necessary disorders, but concern parents when bringing up their child and/or adolescent are addressed. During the workgroups, attention is given to critical-reflection of the material, by means of finding additional scientific literature on a chosen disorder. This literature is used as the basis for the scientific paper.
