Course Description
This course introduces students to the study of cognitive science as the intersection of an array of interrelated disciplines including philosophy, psychology, linguistics, anthropology, computer science, human-computer interaction, and neuroscience. Cognitive science is an interdisciplinary effort to uncover the relationships between brains, minds, computation, and behavior. The course combines a high-level perspective on key questions that the field of cognitive science aims to address along with a nuts-and-bolts training in computational skills that will serve as a necessary foundation for future courses in PPLS and informatics. Classes and assignments cover topics in areas such as language, learning, perception, action, and thought. Students receive hands-on training in the transferable skills of computer programming.

Course Description
This course helps students develop a critical understanding of health and mental health care from a psychological perspective. Drawing upon the research and teaching expertise of the Section of Clinical Psychology within the School of Health in Social Science, students develop a knowledge base of the key psychological concepts and theories in relation to health and mental health. Students also learn to link theories with practice and develop a critical reflection on how theories can inform evidence-based practice in health and mental health care. The course structure follows the natural life span, from childhood, adolescence, adulthood, to older adulthood. In the context of this developmental framework, psychological theories and psychotherapies related to common mental health problems including, for example, anxiety, depression, and psychosis, are also covered.

Course Description
This course will investigate lighting fundamentals for spaces in relation to interior and architectural design contexts. Through a series of case studies and practical lighting workshops, students will explore how lighting affects spaces and learn how to design and specify their own lighting strategies for a design project. This course involves students attending a series of lectures/seminars and building visits where the fundamentals of lighting design are explained and explored, using relevant case studies from the built environment. Supplementary workshops will engage students in practical lighting studies and demonstration of lighting techniques. Students will be tasked with applying the skills taught to a series of design problems, looking at existing building scenarios and further application of an aspect of lighting design to a project of their choice. Students will gain first-hand experience of working with different lighting scenarios using both daylight and artificial light through the creation and representation of their own lighting strategies.

Course Description

This course provides insights into one of the darkest, most disturbing, and most formative eras of European history in the 20th century. The place of the Third Reich in German and European history, as well as reflections on continuity, modernity, and radical change, are discussed in detail. The seminars pay particular attention to conflicting interpretations of how the Third Reich came into being, the reasons for its "success," and how a complete breakdown of a civilization was possible. The seminars develop students' capacity to distinguish between fundamental knowledge and historical interpretations. Different methodological approaches to key questions are presented and discussed next to different political interpretations of the Third Reich. The critical use of different theoretical models is presented and encouraged throughout the course.

Course Description
This course will challenge the students to develop a project brief within a complex and/or multi-functional space/site or series of spaces. Throughout the design process students will be required to rigorously test out proposals and reflect critically on their decision making process. The course will focus on an historic site and students will be required to carry out detailed research and analysis into past and present use to provide a clear rationale in consideration of a suitable new function Group work will allow in-depth site survey, location analysis and demographic studies (where applicable), to provide a shared resource for the duration of the project. Including data, site model and existing sets of drawings. Students will then individually decide on a direction to support the brief, to determine an appropriate function for the space. Students will learn how to demonstrate competence in large-scale planning, spatial layout, and (vertical) circulation, making connections in and between spaces inside and out. They will deliver a comprehensive package of work, to include concept sketches and evidence design process. Final proposals will include a detailed set of technical drawings, rendered visuals, & models, with a strong focus on section and three-dimensional spatial understanding.

Course Description

Linear Algebra is one of the most widely used topics in the mathematical sciences. At lower levels students are taught standard techniques for basic linear algebra tasks including the solution of linear systems, finding eigenvalues/eigenvectors, and orthogonalization of bases. However, these techniques are usually computationally too intensive to be used for the large matrices encountered in practical applications. This course introduces students to these practical issues, and presents, analyzes, and applies algorithms for these tasks which are reliable and computationally efficient. The course includes significant lab work using an advanced programming language. The course studies three main topics: the solution of linear systems of equations, the solution of least squares problems and finding the eigenvectors and/or eigenvalues of a matrix.

Course Description
This course teaches students 35mm analog black and white photographic skills in tandem with a portraiture project. The latter is non-studio based and carried out using available light or basic flash. With mentoring from staff, students choose an area of interest for exploration and produce a series of portraits on their selected theme. Presentations from staff include an overview of historical and contemporary aspects of photographic portraiture with the aim of supporting students in the contextual positioning of their output. Students visit galleries and keep annotated sketchbooks to explore and document their ideas. Technical instruction includes classes in 35mm analog camera handling, black and white film processing, contact sheets, resin coated black and white printing, print retouching, print mounting, and basic flash.
