International Summer School (ISS), New Delhi

This program offers courses on the various facets of India. Part C focuses the Indian society, culture, and heritage. Topics include approaches to the study of Indian society; social movements and social change; women’s rights; linguistic diversity and the role of translation; history of the Indian subcontinent including Bangladesh and Pakistan; identities related to religion, caste, and gender in India; Indian theatre and drama; paintings and photography; religious plurality and origins; architecture; history of news and journalism; Indian dance and its relationship with caste system; Indian cinema; travel writing; gender, family, kinship and marriage; and ideologies of masculinity and femininity in India. The program includes a seminar series with guest speakers. Specific topics may vary each year. Past speakers have included judges, ministers of state, foreign correspondents, among others. Assessment is based on participation, attendance, and an essay. The program encourages students to pick a topic of interest to immerse themselves through research.
