This course is most suitable for learners who can recognize at least 400 Chinese characters, have a Chinese vocabulary of about 1000 words, and grasp basic Chinese grammar with HSK 3 level. Compared to the elementary level, this course’s teaching material / textbook includes longer Chinese articles, a richer vocabulary, and more complex grammar, covering a wider range of topics such as school life, daily life, physical appearance, personality, hobbies, psychological activities, and notable people and cultures from different regions. In class, the teacher will explain the texts in Mandarin and provide various language exercises. 

The course achieves language proficiency matching the level of upper intermediate through a combination of lectures, conversation classes, language laboratory sessions, and presentations. Issues in Chinese culture, history, and civilization, as well as contemporary and modern society, are topics of discussion in the process of learning and practicing the use of the language. By the end of the course, participants are expected to be able to pass HSK level 5 or higher, meeting the language requirement for postgraduate students at a tertiary institution in China or elsewhere for honors or higher levels of study in Chinese-related subjects. DP requirements: Students must attend classes, lab sessions and tutorials regularly, submit the prescribed number of assignments and write any class test that may be scheduled. Submission dates must be adhered to. Assessment: Coursework (assignments and tests) counts for 40% of the final mark; two-hour written examination counts for 40%; oral and aural examination counts for 20%. Participates should be able to write paragraphs of approximately 1000 characters and speak fairly clearly on a variety of topics with very limited time for preparation.

This course focuses on each of the language skills listening, speaking, reading, writing and translation. It covers a series of subjects, genres and literary styles that reflect the characteristics of contemporary Chinese social life and ethnic culture. Its purpose is to enable students to study a diverse range of subjects, rich content and complex language structures in the original Chinese text. In addition, it will help students understand the original meaning and connotations of texts and increase their ability to use Chinese. Through the use of extensive vocabulary, grammar practice, correction of writing errors, analysis of texts, reading comprehension and other classroom exercises, this course aims at comprehensively explaining and training the skills and elements of Chinese Language that students typically find difficult to grasp.

This is a language course designed for international students specializing in Business Chinese. The curriculum primarily covers the composition of various business correspondence, including letters of invitation, appreciation, apology, establishing business relations, as well as inquiries, offers, counter-offers, and claims. Through the study of these contents, the course aims to equip students with the essential language fundamentals, specific vocabulary and sentence patterns for business writing, along with the necessary Business Chinese knowledge required for related professional operations.

After completing this course, students will make progress in the following areas. 

1. Students can master the initial consonants, vowels, and tones of Pinyin, as well as the basic rules of Pinyin writing and the use of Pinyin recognition. 

2. Students also need to learn the basic structure of Chinese characters, including stroke, stroke order, radicals, etc., to learn how to write Chinese characters correctly, and to improve writing speed on this basis. 

3. Learn new words and basic grammar structures, and practice the students' vocabulary and grammar. 

4. Learn daily communication topics and be able to communicate fluently with others on these issues. 

5. Read Chinese articles mainly composed of learned vocabulary and grammar, and strive to gradually understand the main content of the article correctly during practice. 

6. Learn to use the vocabulary learned to write short essays, covering topics such as character introductions, family introductions, interests, and hobbies.

This course teaches students the primary strategies and techniques of English-Chinese translation as well as the rudimentary methods of non-literary and literary English-Chinese translation through lectures, in-class exercises and guidance, as well as assignments and feedback. It also aims at familiarizing students with the basic workflow of translation as well as the fundamental theories and notions related to translation practice.

This course targets first-year students who have completed a one-semester introductory Chinese program. It systematically develops proficiency in vocabulary, Chinese characters, grammar, and culture through everyday communicative contexts, with a special focus on campus life. Topics cover family, weekend activities, campus routines, social interactions, shopping, visiting, studies, and work. By the end of the course, students will be able to recognize, use, and write approximately 250 Chinese words, understand about 30 character radicals, and master 15 key grammatical points.

This advanced translation course teaches and consolidates grammar points, with French-to-Chinese translation used as one of the methods for applying them.
