Course Description
This course covers engineering design and encourages students to develop their engineersmanship. There is more to design than analysis and following codes, and students discover that it is a creative and innovative process. Many parts of the civil and environmental engineering curriculums involve mechanistic and law-like solutions to problems, guided by text books and design standards. Rapid urbanization around the world means problems are becoming more complex and unexpected requiring solutions for which text books and design standards are of limited use.

Course Description
This course gives a brief overview of processes for municipal water and wastewater treatment. It includes coagulation-flocculation, sedimentation, rapid sand filtration, adsorption, ion exchange, membranes, dissolved air flotation, disinfection; and biological wastewater treatment such as activated sludge, trickling filters, and anaerobic digestion. Most of the lectures consist of theoretical background and application exercises.

Course Description

This course provides a multidisciplinary introduction to fire dynamics covering fundamentals applicable to fire safety engineering in the built environment, manufacturing, and process industries. It considers the processes that govern how fires are ignited and how they burn and how they can be controlled through engineering design. The course covers fundamental fire science including thermochemistry, transient heat transfer, material flammability, smoke and fire plumes, and basic fire models; as well as the principles of fire safety engineering, including regulation relevant to the built environment and process industries.
