Course Description
During this course, participants work on a scientific project of limited scope under the supervision of an experienced researcher. Project topics vary every semester, but are always related to the current research projects of the Neural Information Processing Group. In the past, topics were selected from research fields including the modeling of neural systems, machine learning, artificial neural network and their application, and from the analysis of neural data. During the course, students read original publications, learn how to prepare and present a brief project proposal, learn how to scientifically address a complex problem, learn how to discuss and defend their findings during a scientific poster session, and a how to compile their results in form of a typical conference paper. This course also includes a seminar.

Course Description
Machine learning combines the fields of engineering, statistics, mathematics, and computing. This course covers a wide range of machine learning methods, both model-based and algorithmic. It illustrates the applications of these methods through real-world examples and datasets. It also aims to present the theoretical foundation of these methodologies. Students should be familiar with the basic concepts of statistics (up to linear regression) and have some basic understanding of calculus and linear algebra. Some minimal experience with computer programming is also required.

Course Description

This course provides an introduction to artificial neural networks and deep learning, with both theoretical and practical aspects. This course gives a basic knowledge of artificial neural networks and deep learning: both the theoretical background and how to practically use these methods for typical problems in machine learning and data mining. The course covers the most common models in artificial neural networks, with a focus on the multi-layer perceptron. The course contains three computer exercises where the student train and evaluate different ANN models.

Course Description
Computational processes are increasingly being discovered in natural, social, and economic systems as well as typical silicon-based computing devices such as laptops and smartphones. For those with little or no previous computing education, this course develops the necessary understanding and thinking skills so that such systems can be viewed as predictable, understandable, and ultimately controllable. It is valuable in its own right, as an underpinning now required in many other disciplines, and as a foundation for further study in computing science.
