Course Description
In computing, there is continual tension between time usage and space usage, and what can be computed and what cannot be computed at all. The purpose of this course is to explore these issues. Topics covered include: regular languages; context-free language; Turing machines; decidability; reducibility; complexity; complexity classes (P, NP, PSPACE, EXPSPACE, L, and NL); intractability. Also covered in this course are: computational models such as finite automata, pushdown automata, and Turing machines, the languages recognized by some of these models, and techniques for showing their limitations, such as the pumping lemmas for regular and for context-free languages; the power and limits of algorithmic solvability, with focus on the computationally unsolvable Halting problem; the reducibility method for proving that additional problems are computationally unsolvable; how to analyze algorithms and their time and space complexity and how to classify problems according to the amount of time and space required to solve them; known computational problems that are solvable in principle but not in practice, i.e., intractable problems. Students obtain the following skills; reading and writing specifications of languages using computational models and grammars; classifying given languages according to type (regular, context-free, etc.) and algorithmic problems according to complexity (time and space); showing the equivalence between certain machine models; presenting the relevant constructions and proofs in writing, using precise terminology and an appropriate level of technical detail. Prerequisites: Basic algorithms and discrete mathematics course(s).

Course Description

This course studies fundamental data mining methods, data preparation and preprocessing, common analysis algorithms and methods, principles of Information visualization, human perception and visualization design, and data visualization techniques for particular data types. Part one deals with the principal data understanding methods, the second and main focus lies on automatic data preprocessing, cluster & outlier analysis techniques, classification and association rules. Subject of the third part are the basics of information visualization, the foundations of human perception and user interface design.

Course Description

This course is part of the Laurea Magistrale degree program and is intended for advanced level students. Enrollment is by consent of the instructor. The course content is divided into three distinct parts. The first part of the course discusses the evolution of the discipline from Human Computer Interaction to User Experience Design, focusing on the human, the computer, and their interaction. The second part of the course is on usability analysis and design, topics include a systematic discussion of the techniques and standards for the management of the process of user experience design, with particular attention to the phases of usability analysis (with and without the participation of users), and the user- and goal-oriented usability design methodologies. The third part of the course examines the guidelines, patterns, and methods for usability design. During this section the course discusses, with historical aspects, the framework on which the concrete aspects of usability design is based, and strong attention is given to the problem of usability for web applications and mobile apps.
