Course Description
Mounting evidence suggests that quality early childhood education and development programs may promote human capital, and therefore potentially alter lifetime trajectories of children, especially for children from more disadvantaged backgrounds. This course looks at early childhood education and care policies with a focus on an economic perspective, while also reviewing diverse interdisciplinary concepts framing the policy context. The main course objectives are to: understand and question current concepts in early childhood development and their relevance for policy making; learn about the economics of public investments in early learning; explore cross-national differences in policies and current policy debates; and apply acquired knowledge to critically evaluate existing early childhood systems.

Course Description
In this course students learn to recognize, understand, and analyze the cultural nature of settings of child raising and education relevant to multicultural societies. They learn to deal with different theoretical perspectives on cultural diversity, related to issues of equity and migration more broadly, as well as to policy issues in these areas. The course teaches students to apply this knowledge in a number of relevant professional fields such as clinical work, parenting support programs, education, etc., but also to different thematic fields, such as radicalization and street culture. The course confronts students with the perspectives of parents, children, and youth as well as with the perspectives of professionals that need to find a way to tackle the issues and dilemma that cultural diversity presents them with. The literature and practice based assignment allows students to gain and apply knowledge of professional contexts in the Dutch society and at the same time, through a comparative perspective, learn about international contexts.

Course Description
This course provides an introduction to key issues in the interdisciplinary field of comparative and international education, with a focus on education and development. The first part of the course examines the key debates defining the parameters of comparative and international education, the concept of educational opportunity and education for all, and mass educational expansion. It also focuses on educational problems in developing countries. The course explores the role of international institutions such as World Bank, UN, or OECD, as well as international aid. It covers issues of educational quality, equality and equity, gender, and children at risk (for instance, in post-conflict settings). Lastly, the course analyzes policy issues and the practical value of research, international large-scale assessments such as PISA, policy borrowing and educational reforms, and how globalization and international discourses can affect national policies. Students gain a deeper understanding of the philosophical and practical issues governing the field, and are trained to critically read studies from an interdisciplinary body of literature specific to Comparative and International Education. Assessment: participation and attendance (15%), weekly activity assignments (20%), group project (30%), final paper (35%).
