Course Description
This course covers key sociological dimensions of activities and interactions related to the leisure industries. It focuses on sociological concepts, meaning, structure, and functions in leisure and work. These concepts include the notions of leisure participation, why it is that leisure participation is not evenly or randomly distributed within the population, and what models might help explain that. It investigates key scholars and schools who have advanced thinking in this field, including Pierre Bourdieu, who theorized how tastes are socially acculturated, and the Leicester School, whose work focused on understanding the phenomenon of football hooliganism.

Course Description

The International Internship course develops vital business skills employers are actively seeking in job candidates. This course is comprised of two parts: an internship, and a hybrid academic seminar. Students are placed in an internship within a sector related to their professional ambitions. The hybrid academic seminar, conducted both online and in-person, analyzes and evaluates the workplace culture and the daily working environment students experience. The course is divided into eight career readiness competency modules as set out by the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE), which guide the course’s learning objectives. During the academic seminar, students reflect weekly on their internship experience within the context of their host culture by comparing and contrasting their experiences with their global internship placement with that of their home culture. Students reflect on their experiences in their internship, the role they have played in the evolution of their experience in their internship placement, and the experiences of their peers in their internship placements. Students develop a greater awareness of their strengths relative to the career readiness competencies, the subtleties and complexities of integrating into a cross-cultural work environment, and how to build and maintain a career search portfolio.

Course Description
Coaching and training is all about facilitating learning for individuals and groups/teams. The knowledge and skills that are necessary for coaching and training are important for academic professionals who are going to support co-workers or clients. Coaching is directed at fostering self-directed learning and personal growth. The coach aims at enlarging problem solving and self-regulating skills of individuals or teams. Coaching is more about asking the right questions than telling people what to do. Coaching involves working towards the goal the employee has set for him- or herself in collaboration with the coach. Training involves designing a learning environment (the workshop) for a group and to subsequently deliver this workshop to the target audience. A workshop aims at activating the participants to acquire knowledge, understanding and skills with regards to a given subject. When this is done in an effective way, the workshop facilitates change to achieve individual and organizational goals. The course gives the opportunity to acquire experience with coaching and training. Students are asked to take on the different roles of coach and coachee, of trainer and workshop participant, because the change of perspective leads to a deeper understanding of effective coaching and training. The theoretical knowledge about coaching and training helps you to place your experiences in a wider scope of reference and provides a framework to reflect on your learning process. Theory is used as a source of inspiration for the coaching process and workshop design and it is used to attain a well-founded self-reflection. Theory and practice combined lead students to develop their own perspective on coaching and training.
