This course provides a study of the systemic and teleconnected behavior of the Earth system to different spatial and temporal resolution, as well as a geographical analysis of the different components of the climate system. Course Description

This intensive language course prepares students for daily life in Spain by emphasizing their level of Spanish in communication and interactions in everyday settings. This course focuses on Spanish language at the intermediate level with special emphasis on grammar, vocabulary, conversation and composition as well as basic Catalan. It includes organized visits to cultural areas in Barcelona (La Pedrera, Sagrada Familia, Park Güell, Cathedral of Barcelona, and the Jewish Quarter). Assessment: Class participation, weekly assignments, final exam.

Course Description
This course provides a study on urban risks. With a focus on resiliency planning, the course emphasizes analytical practices to evaluate risks related to natural phenomena (inclusive of earthquakes, storms, volcano eruptions, and other various phenomena) and human activities that create risks (for example, construction in vulnerable zones and threats due to climate change). It also analyzes risk reduction and management solutions that planners can utilize to mitigate against natural disasters and changing climates and conditions. Course materials and resources include case studies as well as professional guest speakers working in both public and private planning agencies in Mexico.

The course examines the origins and workings of the European Union and the challenges it faces and provides a study of the static and dynamic aspects of European integration, with special emphasis on economic integration. Course Description
This two semester course covers modern and contemporary narratives, essays, poems, and theater pieces from Spain. Literary movements (or "generations") and historical context are also examined in relation to the literature. Assessment is based on attendance, participation, commentaries on reading assignments, a final essay and one final exam. Some authors and literary movements examined are: Generation 98 (Unamuno, Machado, Pio Baroja, Azorín, Valle Inclán), Generation 14 (Ortega y Gasset, Juan Ramón Jiménez, Ramón Gómez de la Serna), Generation 27 (Manuel Cifo González, Dámaso Alonso, Jorge Guillén, Pedro Salinas, Luis Cernuda, Federico García Lorca, Rafael Alberti), post-war Spain (Mercé Rodoreda, Antonio Buero Vallejo), Generation 50 and Contemporary Spain.
