Course Description
This course provides comprehensive training in reading, listening, speaking and writing in Japanese at the elementary level with an emphasis on elementary grammar. Language lessons are conducted in four languages: Japanese, English, Cantonese and Mandarin. Teachers use various kinds of conversational practices based on natural conversation emphasizing the use of the language in context. It focuses on sentence pattern practice and basic grammar, oral drills, simple compositions, dictation, translation, and reading. This course starts from the writing system and basic pronunciation.

Course Description
This is an accelerated (1 semester as opposed to 1 year) beginner's Japanese language course. Students learn a range of vocabulary; use familiar everyday expressions and high-frequency vocabulary in predictable situations; produce simple texts; gain basic intercultural awareness; read, assess, and analyze simple texts; and objectively compare some aspects of the new culture to their own.

Course Description
This course improves lower advanced level listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. It introduces the 50 most important sentence patterns for advanced level students and reviews the important sentence patterns from the intermediate level. Students acquire a command of practical Japanese necessary for daily communication and for study and research in a Japanese university. They master 8000 basic words and 1500 basic kanji. Text: JYOKYU NIHONGO 1 by Chitose Sao et al. Assessment: attendance and homework assignments (10%), quizzes (60%), and a final exam (30%).

Course Description

This course develops a well-balanced, intermediate level proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. It introduces 100 important intermediate level sentence patterns through close reading of texts. Students master approximately 4000 basic words and 500 intermediate kanji. Students expand their vocabulary and their understanding of grammar and sentence patterns through the reading of texts and short composition practices. Note: Intermediate Japanese language levels at the host university are comparable to UC upper-division language courses.

Course Description

Course Description

This course is aimed at students who have experience studying at the intermediate level. It provides a comprehensive study of upper-intermediate Japanese language, preparing students to move on to the advanced level. Through close reading of textbooks, the course increases one's knowledge of grammar, vocabulary, and kanji, and improves one's reading comprehension and written expression skills. Similarly, the course improves one's oral expression skills to explain and discuss what they have understood.
