Course Description

This course provides a comprehensive introduction to the law and practice of international dispute settlement. The course begins with an introduction to the obligation to settle international disputes peacefully and an overview of the fundamental principles of dispute settlement. The course then explores the non-judicial means of dispute settlement: negotiation, mediation, good offices, inquiry, and conciliation. Thereafter, the course focuses on the judicial settlement of disputes by international courts and tribunals, in particular the International Court of Justice, the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea dispute settlement mechanisms, the dispute settlement procedures and mechanisms of the World Trade Organization, and arbitral tribunals in both inter-State and investor-State disputes. The course concludes by addressing select issues related to international dispute settlement, namely provisional measures, landmark cases (such as the South China Sea arbitration), and contemporary issues such as compliance with judicial and arbitral decisions, and the politics of international investment law. Throughout the course, not only the “law,” but also the “politics” of dispute settlement are addressed.

Course Description
The French notion of “secularism” (or laïcité) is one of the most original aspects of the political, social and cultural reality of France. We speak of "laïcité à la française" to designate a certain type of relationship between the public political sphere and the status of religion(s). Through history, these relationships have been marked by distance and, sometimes, by a dimension of struggle and direct confrontation. Religions tend to be reduced to the private sphere. The “ideal” is that religions must in no way influence political life or even public and cultural life. The French adventure of secularism was thus founded on the project of radically separating politics and religion. This adventure began as early as the sixteenth century and was often confrontational. Secularism has mainly concerned relations between the state and the Catholic religion. But, today, the question arises in a new context marked by the development of Islam. This course is mainly a history class but it is also intended to shed light on contemporary issues and debates. It's about understanding the current issue of secularism through its long history. The following topics are discussed: the impact of the wars of religion (sixteenth century), the place of the Catholic Church in the Ancien Régime, the formulation of the idea of secularism in the Age of Enlightenment, the installation of a "model" of modern secularism under the Modern Republic, the existence of a "culture" of anticlericalism, the school quarrel, the new situation posed by the rise of Islam since the years 1970 and the idea of a crisis of secularism today (new or “post” laïcité).

Course Description

Film, literature, and the arts have always played a central role in reflecting the attitudes towards the twin ideologies of Nazism and Communism in Central and Eastern Europe. They were central to propagandizing these ideologies and building their strength after World War I. However, they also provided the most vibrant forum for those challenging the totalitarian regimes established by Nazis and Communists. In the period since their fall, politics and academia have frequently failed to enable an accessible debate on their legacy. Thus, film and literature remain the site of a debate. This course explores the theme in a multi-disciplinary manner, drawing on history, political science, literature, film studies, and psychology. A thematical, rather than chronological, approach was selected to emphasize the occurrence of the examined issues across regions and times, using different methods of exploration. As Prague is one of the few capitals that experienced liberal democracy, Nazism, Communism, and a return to liberal democracy over the scope of slightly more than 50 years, first-hand experience through field trips and guest speakers is incorporated into the course to enhance understanding of the topic.

Course Description
This class contemplates Black America's history of struggle toward freedom from a multidisciplinary perspective (literature, sociology, and political science) along with an historical background. Central to discussions is a focus on the African-American voice since the eighteenth century. Through the development of their unique cultural and social traditions, Black people have managed to sustain themselves as a people and as Americans in the face of racial oppression. This course also draws on popular culture (music, visual arts, television, sports) as to explore the destiny of Black people in the American contemporary cultural history, with particular attention to the interplay between Black culture and political consciousness. From slave poetess Phyllis Weatley to the rise of white supremacy under the presidency of Donald Trump, Black America's history is an American history and somewhat, a counter-history of the United States. The course uses visual arts, movies and various forms of images to grasp the extent to which African-Americans made their own history.

Course Description
This course focuses on the practices which contribute to good public governance. Students are empowered as future public leaders with the analytical skills to assess success and the practical skills to communicate the results of their analyses to both academic and applied audiences, in a range of policy domains. Firstly, the theoretical and practical concepts of success in public policies, public agencies, collaborations, and in local government are discussed. Each week, students work in groups to write and present blog posts (to be published on the Successful Public Governance research program web site). These memo-style blog entries begin as syntheses of canonical works, and advance through the term towards highlighting theoretical controversies and empirical applications, with the goal of developing innovative arguments and insights into the literature(s) on governance success. This format prepares students for positions of leadership in a range of disciplines by requiring not only thorough theoretical fluency and application familiarity, but also the ability to accessibly contextualize and communicate analytical results to academic and practitioner audiences.
