Course Description
This course is a study of the literary movements, authors, and works of nineteenth century literature of Portugal and Brazil, through representative texts. Topics include: Neoclassicism to Romanticism -- Almeida Garrett; Alexandre Herculano; poetry of Gonçalves Dias and Castro Alves and the prose of José de Alencar; the Generation of '70 -- C. Castelo Branco, Antero de Quental; José Maria de Eça de Queiroz; the prose of Machado de Assis, Aluísio de Azevedo, Raul Pompéia, and Inglês de Sousa; Cesário Verde; Decedentism, Symbolism, and Neoromanticism -- Eugênio de Castro, Antonio Nobre, Camilo Pessanha, Olavo Bilac, and João da Cruz e Sousa.
