Course Description

Using a variety of texts and genres as case studies (including the short story, novel, theater, and poetry), this course explores the way in which 20th-century writers in the Hispanic world have reflected upon their social and cultural realities. Through an examination of new aesthetic trends and new treatments of stock themes such as religion, politics, and love, it appraises the very characteristics of modern Latin American and Peninsular Spanish cultures.

Course Description

This intensive language course prepares students for daily life in Spain by emphasizing their level of Spanish in communication and interactions in everyday settings. This course focuses on Spanish language at the intermediate level with special emphasis on grammar, vocabulary, conversation and composition as well as basic Catalan. It includes organized visits to cultural areas in Barcelona (La Pedrera, Sagrada Familia, Park Güell, Cathedral of Barcelona, and the Jewish Quarter). Assessment: Class participation, weekly assignments, final exam.

Course Description
This two semester course covers modern and contemporary narratives, essays, poems, and theater pieces from Spain. Literary movements (or "generations") and historical context are also examined in relation to the literature. Assessment is based on attendance, participation, commentaries on reading assignments, a final essay and one final exam. Some authors and literary movements examined are: Generation 98 (Unamuno, Machado, Pio Baroja, Azorín, Valle Inclán), Generation 14 (Ortega y Gasset, Juan Ramón Jiménez, Ramón Gómez de la Serna), Generation 27 (Manuel Cifo González, Dámaso Alonso, Jorge Guillén, Pedro Salinas, Luis Cernuda, Federico García Lorca, Rafael Alberti), post-war Spain (Mercé Rodoreda, Antonio Buero Vallejo), Generation 50 and Contemporary Spain.

Course Description
This course offers an introduction to Spanish dialectology and develops communicative competence in a horizontal way, that is, by linking theory and practice. The course covers the main dialect areas of the Spanish-speaking world, their evolution, and the influence of other languages (mainly indigenous languages, creoles, Portuguese and English) on the Spanish spoken in certain areas of the world. It presents basic concepts related to the fields of sociolinguistics and dialectology, and raises awareness of the current widespread extension of the Spanish language and its future prospects. There is special emphasis on the characteristics of each particular dialect area at the levels of phonology, lexis and grammar, as well as on the Spanish spoken in the U.S. and the different phenomena related to bilingual speech / bilingual language acquisition. The methodology of this course is a blended-learning one.

It examines idea organization as well as proper usage of language: introductions; conclusions; sentence structure; and vocabulary. This course examines literature from the Spanish Golden Age with an emphasis on the playwrights and plays that originated during this time.
