About The Program
This summer research program is designed for UC juniors and seniors with strong foundational knowledge in science and/or engineering. You will have the opportunity to conduct full-time research at Tohoku University, which is well established in hands-on learning and collaborative research. Research will be conducted in a lab on the Aobayama campus with one of the following schools: School of Science, School of Engineering, or School of Agriculture. Due to the smaller campus, you will get to know the faculty and your student lab partners. The experience includes field trips, expert topical lectures, targeted scholarly readings, group discussions, and student presentations. Summer is a wonderful time to visit Sendai because of the lower average temperatures compared to Tokyo. The campus is surrounded by forests, mountains, and the sea, and popular outdoor activities include cruising mountain rivers by standup paddleboard, surfing at Shobutahama Beach, and zip-lining over Sendai’s natural beauty.
Where you'll study
Established as Japan’s third national university, Tohoku University has a strong research-first approach. The university partners with the city of Sendai to promote the collaboration between academics and business, particularly in the area of research. Students work in labs for a variety of disciplines: science, engineering, and agriculture. Priding itself on having a pioneering spirit, Tohoku was the first university in Japan to admit international students. Most of Tohoku University's facilities sit on the ancient castle grounds of a feudal warlord. The university has two gardens: Tohoku University Botanical Garden, which serves research and educational needs, and the Medicinal Plant Garden, which cultivates over 1,200 plants for medical research.
