Choose from a wide range of courses designed specifically for international students through the University of Barcelona (UB) Estudios Hispánicos program, with courses offered in both English and Spanish. Alternatively, students may choose a Audiovisual and Audio Production course, taught in English and offered through the Department of Philology and Communication as part of the International Tracks program. With classes in the heart of downtown Barcelona, you’ll be ideally situated to experience all that this vibrant, world-class city has to offer.

Requirements While Abroad

To successfully complete this program: 

  • Take a total of 9.5-10 quarter/6.3-6.6 semester UC units. 
  • Estudios Hispánicos courses are 5 quarter/3.3 semester UC units.  The International Tracks Workshop course is 9.5 quarter/6.3 semester UC units.
  • Select either two Estudios Hispánicos courses or one International Tracks Workshop course.
  • Take all courses for a letter grade. Pass/no pass credit isn't available on this program.

This program offers two types of courses: Estudios Hispánicos courses and International Tracks Workshops.  Students will either select two Estudios Hispánicos courses or one International Tracks Workshop course for this program.

Estudios Hispánicos

5 quarter /3.3 semester UC units per course

UB Estudios Hispánicos offers coursework designed specifically for international students. Courses are offered on a variety of subjects such as Art History, Business Administration, Catalan, Film & Media Studies, Geography, History, Political Science, Sociology, and Spanish.  Content courses are offered in both English and Spanish.  The minimum level of Spanish language required for a content course taught in Spanish can be found by selecting the course on the Estudios Hispánicos website (reference Catalogs and Resources below).  UB Estudios Hispánicos also offers Spanish language courses at the elementary, intermediate, and advanced levels.

Course offerings may change depending on student interest and the availability of professors in the summer months.  Course information and syllabi can be found on the Estudios Hispánicos website (reference Catalogs and Resources below).

International Tracks Workshop

9.5 quarter /6.3 semester UC units per course

Please note if you list the International Tracks Workshop on your course selection form, enrollment in this course is considered final, you cannot drop or swap this course.

Exact offerings may vary depending on enrollment and instructor availability. Final course offerings are announced before the start of the program.  If an International Tracks Workshop course is not offered, students will be required to select two Estudios Hispánicos courses to fulfill minimum program requirements.

Academic Culture

UB is one of the largest and oldest universities in Spain. Courses are designed for short summer terms, and small class sizes make for close contact between students and instructors.

Before the program begins, you'll choose your course preferences with the UCEAP course selection form. UCEAP staff will use this information to complete your registration with UB. Students do not register on the UB website for this program, only through the UCEAP course selection form. 

Grades

You will earn direct UC credit and grades for all coursework. Grades for the summer term are available in late September. They may not arrive in time to accommodate summer degree verification deadlines. 

Please be aware that UCEAP uses a grade conversion scale that is different from the UB suggested grade conversion.
