This course offers a study of the social function of journalism. Topics include: the characterization, capture, and writing of news; structure of the news in various printed and audiovisual media; organization and operation of newspapers and journalism departments of radio and television stations; press offices; news agencies; history of journalism in Brazil.

This course examines the conceptual and theoretical aspects and implication of human rights in international relations and foreign policy. It reflects on the establishment and development of an international human rights architecture. It also discusses the realization of human rights; revision of the concepts of sovereignty, and possible re-understanding of international relations; human rights and international justice; human rights and conflict; hegemony and empire; current human rights tensions; and the future of human rights in international politics.

This course provides a study of the meanings and values of literature and culture through history and the connections of literature with other areas of cultural production including the visual arts, music, film and photography. It examines the links between literature, culture and nationality, in particular the different interpretations of the "Brazilian culture," implications of its appropriation, and the Brazilian social imagination. Other topics include: cultural modernity; literature, culture and the challenge of difference; modernist reversal of the cultural construction of "Brazilian-ness"; contemporary views on culture.

This course offers a study of the history of Brazilian cinema from its origins to the contemporary era. It explores the primary movements within this art form.

This course explores the contributions of international political sociology on the renewal of critical research agenda in international relations. It discusses the opportunity international political sociology provides to deal with issues previously marginalized by international studies such as: the creation of international borders; social surveillance apparatus; transnational crime; flexible citizenship; international governance technologies; infrastructures and logistics.

This course examines the origins and development of modern architecture in Brazil. It explores the French artistic mission style and its influences, neoclassicism, eclecticism, and neocolonialism. It also looks at modern and contemporary architecture in cities such as Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo, Recife, and Belo Horizonte.

This course offers a study of graphics software. Students use computer technologies for the creation, evaluation, understanding, communication, and presentation of architecture and urbanism projects by using three-dimensional modeling programs, editing and image processing, and digital presentation.

This course offers an introduction to solid mechanics. Topics include: structural idealization; balance, forces, and moments; trusses; tensions and deformations; mechanical properties of materials; transformation of stresses in the plane; twist; stresses and tensions in beams; cables.
