This course explores political emancipation and construction of the State in the Brazilian Empire. Its analyzes the principal social groups who influenced the construction of the imperial state. This course discusses 18th-century revolts against colonial rule, independence, the political process during the Empire, republicanism, and the abolition movement.

Course Description
This course focuses on the Brazilian Republic from the 1920s to present day. It begins with political projects and social movements in the last years of the First Republic, followed by corporatism, labor, and social legislation. It explores culture politics, and ethnic and racial relations in the New State as well as industrialization and urbanization. Topics include: art, culture, and diversity in the second half of the 20th century; authoritarianism, democracy, and human rights; dilemmas of re-democratization; memory, identity, and citizenship.

This course offers an introduction to geotechnical engineering. Topics include: origin and formation of soils; geological-geotechnical profiles-- direct and indirect surveys; undisturbed and dented sampling; soil characterization-- granulometric distribution, physical indexes, limits of consistency, geotechnical classification systems; soil structures, mineralogy of clays, and compacted soils; tensions in soil masses-- geostatic stresses and induced stresses; effective stress and pressure; capillarity; percolation in soils-- concept of loads, permanent flow, permeability coefficient.
