Course Description
This course provides an introduction to the Italian Renaissance, a major cultural and artistic phenomenon, which deeply marked Europe between 1400 and 1600. Initiated in Florence where it flourished in the first decade of the fifteenth century (Quattrocento), it quickly spread to all major Italian courts and eventually throughout Europe. This course introduces the student to the history of the Renaissance in Italy in the fifteenth century and provides them with a solid foundation of historical knowledge as well as visual references in the history of modern art. The sessions cover, in turn, the heritage of international Gothic, the rise of the great urban centers of the Italian Renaissance (Florence and Rome but also Venice, Mantua, Ferrara, and Milan) and the work of major artists, including Botticelli, Mantegna, Michelangelo, Raphael, and da Vinci. The lectures are supplemented by discussions during which the students delve deeper into the themes, concepts, and works in progress as well as the foundations of the commentary methods on the works (sculpture, architecture, painting, decorative arts) in art history.
