In this course, students explore theoretical perspectives that examine child and adolescent development including the bio-psycho-social basis of development and developmental neuroscience, intersubjectivity, the social self in childhood and adolescence, gender development, impact of formal education, and topical issues in child and adolescent psychology.

This course explores the historiography of media portrayal of crime in Ireland from the 1970s to the present. The course studies newspaper reporting of crime in Ireland; the broadcast media and emotive reporting; the role of the Garda Press Office; missing persons reportage; media ownership and white collar/blue collar crime; and the rise of the crime correspondent in both the print and broadcast media. Students also explore the blurred distinctions between fiction and reality in both US and Irish TV crime dramas; media stereotyping of crime and its influence on public discourse; and the complexities of media ownership in Ireland and the notion of ethical gate-keeping.

This is a course about early language acquisition. Students learn to describe pre-linguistic and early linguistic development in children; outline the stages of phonetic and phonological development in typically-developing children; analyze the salient phonetic and phonological characteristics of speech samples from children typically developing speech; explain how children's vocabulary develops in the pre-school years; outline the course of early grammatical development in children; describe the processes involved in early simultaneous and sequential bilingualism; and appreciate the effects of early language delay and disorder on the acquisition of speech, language and communication.
