Course Description

This course examines a selection of early Irish-lyric poems and voyage tales from the period circa AD 700-1100. The selected texts illustrate the richness and creativity of medieval Irish literature which represents the oldest vernacular literature in western Europe. This course focuses on the genres of medieval Irish literature, the scribal context of the surviving manuscript witnesses, the existence of hermitic or nature poetry, the interaction between history and literature in early Irish tales, and the allegorical significance of these texts. All poems and tales are read in translation, but students have the opportunity to engage with the texts in their original language as found in extant manuscripts and in published critical editions

The course begins with classical political anthropology's focus on non-Western political systems during the colonial era, using the example of "stateless societies." Students then examine anthropology's critique of colonialism and of classical anthropology, which includes themes of domination, resistance, and accommodation in colonial contexts. Students also focus on the concerns of political anthropology in the post-colonial era, in particular the problematics of modernization in states with large agrarian populations, the importance of local level politics and relations of power, and social movements and resistance.

Course Description
After nearly 30 years of politically inspired violence Northern Ireland is now apparently “at peace.” Whether or not that peace endures is not the immediate concern of this course. Rather, the class focuses on understanding why there was such a prolonged period of virtual war. Students also examine what, if anything, has changed to make those that once sought to destroy the state now happy to participate in the government of the state. The course considers the varying claims made both by opponents of the state, and contextualizes their conflict within an analytical paradigm that helps us understand their motivations.
