Course Description

This course explores major Spanish literary movements of the 18th and 19th century including the Enlightenment, neoclassicism, romanticism, realism, and naturalism. Each lecture is dedicated to the individual work of the following authors and their contribution to Spanish literature: Friar Feijoo, Ignacio Luzan, Leandro Fernandez de Moratin, Tomas de Iriarte, Felix Maria de Samaniego, Jose de Cadalso, Victor Hugo, Mariano Jose de Larra, Angel Saavedra, Jose de Espronceda, Jose de Zorilla, Juan Valera, Pedro Antonio de Alarcon, Perez Galdos, Leopoldo Alas, and Emilia Pardo Bazan. A focus is also placed on neoclassical fabulists, pre-romanticism, romantic Spanish poetry of the 19th century, and post-romanticism.

This course is divided into three parts. Part one offers a history and introduction to literary theory that made possible the emergence of post-structuralism. Part two discusses Jacques Derrida, his foundational texts, and the theory of deconstruction. The final part of the course examines feminist theories in literature.
