Course Description
This course covers the fundamental concepts of actuarial financial mathematics and how these concepts are applied in calculating present and accumulated values for various streams of cash flows. The topics covered include interest rates, present value, annuities valuation, loan repayment, bond and portfolio yield, bond valuation, rate of return, yield curve, term structure of interest rates, duration and convexity of general cash flows and portfolios, immunization, stock valuation, capital budgeting, dynamic cash flow processes, and asset and liability management.

Course Description
The course examines the growing integration of science and technology in our workplaces, the impact of science and technology on the direction of work, the workplace and even capitalism itself. The course investigates how science and technology have been key factors in shaping work since at least the beginning of factory production and generally explores the interactions between science, technology and work since that period. Students examine a range of topics and readings from history, sociology and anthropology of the workplace. This course also includes comparative discussions of science and technology as it is integrated into the workplace in industry as compared to the services.

Course Description

This course examines the full spectrum of energy systems used in modern society, including fossil fuels and renewable energy sources, with attention to power generation technologies, energy security, and sustainability challenges. Topics include energy conversion, utilization, and storage for renewable technologies such as wind, solar, biomass, fuel cells, and hybrid systems, grounded in fundamental thermodynamics concepts. The course also explores energy-efficient technologies in buildings, products, manufacturing, and infrastructure, as well as the environmental and social impacts of energy use. Through case studies and discussion, the course addresses debates and misconceptions surrounding sustainable energy systems, energy entrepreneurship, and the role of renewable energy in mitigating climate change and supporting contemporary lifestyles.

Course Description
This course is taken with LIFS2720, Biochemistry Lab. It explains the theories and concepts behind the chosen experimental sessions. This is a basic course introducing the underlying principles of essential biochemical techniques that have remained indispensable in experimental biochemistry. The principles of biochemical techniques including spectrophotometry, column chromatography, electrophoresis, metabolite assay, enzyme assay, nucleic acid isolation, and protein isolation are discussed.

Course Description
This is a hands-on course in basic biochemical techniques. The primary objective is to introduce procedures commonly used in biochemical laboratories and to provide a basis for understanding how biochemical data is obtained, analyzed and presented. Course Description
This course introduces the operation of the Chinese legal system or legal institutions. It examines how laws are used in the social, economic, and political activities of the Chinese people. The course focuses not on the Chinese laws per se but on how laws are used in people's daily lives. Examples or cases are used extensively in the course to illustrate the topics included. Major topics discussed include the interactions between legal institutions and the party-state (i.e., the party and the government), the behavior of legal workers (e.g., judges, police officers), citizens' use of civil lawsuits and administrative litigation, and some important mechanisms through which citizens or other social actors seek justice in China.

Course Description
The culture of a community encompasses social and personal behaviors, language and dialects, visual and performing arts, economic activities and the ideas, beliefs, and customs of its people. As a traditional genre of performing arts unique to Hong Kong, Cantonese opera has a long history of development and is entwined with all such aspects of Hong Kong culture. Set within the socio-cultural context of Hong Kong, this course explores the genre in terms of its course of development, repertory, plots, script structure, performing techniques such as singing, acting, reciting and fencing, troupe organization, training of artists, performing venues including theater and the bamboo stage, and its marketing strategies, aiming at unfolding to the students how an art form should be appreciated through both the aesthetic and functional perspectives.
