Course Description

This course familiarizes students with renewable energy resources and technologies for their utilization. The topic covered include, renewable energy resources, their advantages and limitations; the solar energy potential of Botswana; the utilization of solar energy for power generation: photovoltaic and solar thermal electric plants; solar cells, modules, arrays, and storage batteries; stand-alone and grid-connected photovoltaic plants; solar collectors; solar plants for thermal applications such as water heating, space heating and cooling, and refrigeration; technologies for the utilization of wind, biomass and geothermal energy, hydro-power, ocean and tidal energy; renewable energy system design and economics; and socio-economic and environmental aspects f renewable energy.

Course Description
The course introduces students to basic sociological concepts, principles, theories, and methodologies that bear relevance to everyday life, with an emphasis on the African context. This course offers a concise introduction to the discipline of sociology. As such the course covers fundamental sociological concepts, principles, theoretical perspectives, and research methodologies. Students have the opportunity to learn about the influence of society and groups on individual behavior, the position of individuals within various social organizations, and the manner in which society is structured. Together with theoretical and methodological issues this course introduces specialist areas within sociology such as the way in which sociology seeks to understand the economy, political systems, crime and deviance, and a broad range of social inequalities.

Course Description

This course offers an l introduction to public and environmental health practices in Botswana. The course covers local issues with a focus on the Primary Health Care (PHC) approaches. The PHC aspects include infectious diseases, health promotion, safe drinking water supply, food safety, and basic environmental sanitation. These topics focus on the different health challenges facing Botswana, its population, and the root social and biological causes of these challenges. Historical examples of important health challenges are used to illustrate the nature, role, and organization of public and environmental health. The course also covers aspects of sustainable development regarding health issues/concerns in Botswana.

Course Description
This physical activity course introduces students to the sport of cricket. This is a practical course and students are requires to wear practical attire. The aim of the course is to develop competency in the practical skills of the game of cricket and it is therefore mandatory for students to attend all lessons/classes and come on time for the lesson. Topics include fielding techniques and throwing, bowling techniques, batting in cricket, wicketkeeping, and cricket match and rules.

Course Description
This is an internship through a CIEE course. Students intern at a pre-screened internship opportunity with a community based organization or a local business in a field of their choosing. Students record their experiences in a journal, which is evaluated weekly during the internship, and complete a final assignment and oral presentation. Students have the guidance of a mentor and the Academic Advisor/internship coordinator. Students learn to work successfully in a new environment, meaningfully contribute to the organization and the community it serves, gain valuable work experience, and have the opportunity to reflect and learn throughout the internship.

Course Description
This course discusses the conflicts and settlement patterns in the sub-region of Southern Africa in the first quarter of the 19th century. The course deals with the historiography of the conflicts surrounding the settlement patterns of the Southern African sub-region and the debates emanating thereof. Through a variety of interpretations, arguments, and analyses available in the specified literature, students read and internalize the different perspectives of debates, analyze and critique what they have read, and form their own independent opinion on the subject. The course discusses topics including an overview of the history of settlement patterns and their associated conflicts in Southern African societies; why different societies and their cultures are where they are presently; and the historiography surrounding the debates about conflicts and settlement patterns of Southern Africa.

Course Description

This course is designed to help students practice and interact in Setswana during visits to local historical and cultural sites, while engaged in various community-based learning projects. This is a task-based course and requires students to take the lead to complete tasks or research projects of personal interest. This course also serves as a language clinic, so that students can have all of their questions related to Setswana learning answered. Assessment: attendance and participation in discussions and exercises, focus questions, group research project, midterm and final exams, scavenger hunt.
