Course Description

This is a beginners' for students with no Chinese language education. The course consists of three main components: conversation, grammar, and Chinese characters. The course covers vocabulary items, sentence patterns and utilizes short texts to aid in instruction. Approximately 180 Chinese characters and 150 phrases are introduced and students acquire basic communicative skills to deal with simple daily situations.

Course Description

This course is for students who have completed Elementary Chinese III or at least 350 hours of Chinese language study. The course develops proficient language skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing that enables students to communicate effectively in their daily lives. Students learn commonly used new vocabularies and grammar that are not often used in daily conversations. Through the course, students learn to use appropriate Chinese language to carry on discussions to further understand Taiwanese culture and language. This course uses the textbook “Practical Audio-Visual Chinese III” (chapter 4-14) Assessment: attendance and participation (20%), quizzes (20%), assignments (20%), midterm exam (20%), final exam (20%).

Course Description

This intensive course is intended for foreign learners who have no prior knowledge of Cantonese. The course introduces students to present-day Cantonese, with an emphasis on learning correct pronunciation throughthe Jyutpingphonetic romanization transcriptionsystem and basic structure. It aims to develop fundamental oral communication skills through a variety of situational conversationsin a highly interactive classroom. Assessment: self introduction, group presentation, midterm written test, final written test, class participation and exercises, two reading recordings.

Course Description

The course introduces and analyzes situations and expressions of modern Chinese, as well as different types of modern Chinese works, focusing on the improvement of students' expression skills (listening, speaking, reading, and writing). Through this course, students become familiar with modern Chinese pragmatics and assist them with expression of their inner feelings and thinking.Through the reading and analysis of classic chapters, students develop basic professional knowledge of Chinese.

Course Description
This course focuses on the golden age of Chinese opera, including two major opera traditions: Yuan Zaju and Ming and Qing Dynasties legend. At the same time, it talks about the origin and characteristics of opera, the system of Qu, the South Opera in the late Yuan Dynasty and the early Ming Dynasty, the competition among playwrights, the thriving of local operas in the Qing Dynasty, and the influence of drama on novels. The course encourages the appreciation of Chinese opera tradition. On one hand, it guides students to read and analyze texts; on the other hand, it helps students to learn about the various elements of a Chinese opera performance and the comprehensive art needed to achieve stage effects.

Course Description

This course analyzes Chinese historical short stories with a focus on reading comprehension. The course exposes international students to Chinese culture and stories while developing and improving Chinese vocabulary through the introduction of new words and idioms. The course also explores the historical context for each of the stories through videos, images, and other sources (outside of the textbook). The course is intended for students who understand at least 2200 words in Chinese. Assessment: two quizzes, midterm, final, participation, and attendance.

Course Description

This beginning-language course in standard (Mandarin) Chinese is a continuation of Chinese I. It consists of three components: grammar, conversation and Chinese characters. The course introduces another 280 Chinese characters and 250 phrases. Emphasis is placed on listening, speaking, reading and the writing of Chinese characters.
