This beginning Cantonese course familiarizes students with the use of basic vocabulary and grammar points. Vocabulary is introduced based on everyday conversations and daily usage. This is an intermediate level Chinese language course, focusing on reading comprehension. This course strengthens modern Chinese reading ability through different texts in a variety of topics that include advanced Chinese vocabulary and expression. It examines newspapers and Chinese literature in order to have a better understanding of sentence structure, different types of expressions, and comprehension ability.

Through guided reading of some of the masterpieces of modern Chinese literature, this course examines the history of modern Chinese literature and analyzes literary works within the framework of literary history.

This course is for students who have taken Intermediate III of the Chinese Language Course for International Students or those who have taken Chinese for at least 700 hrs. By the end of the course students are capable of using written language to communicate effectively in formal writing and of understanding public announcements, news, and other broadcasts. In addition to the text lessons, this course also brings up topics each class that help students develop proficiency in listening, speaking, reading and writing. Through the course, students are able to use appropriate Chinese to carry on discussions, and read newspapers and magazines to further understand Taiwanese culture and language.
