Course Description

The History of the Chinese Language is a theoretical course focusing on the regular pattern of Chinese language development and changes, requiring certain basic knowledge of ancient Chinese language and modern Chinese language. The purpose of this course is to enable students to learn the basic features of Chinese language pronunciation, vocabulary and grammar in different historical periods, to understand the development and changes of Chinese language in different historical era, to explore the characteristics and causes of these developments, and to reveal the internal laws of Chinese language development.

Course Description

This course is designed for international and local Taiwan undergraduate students. By reviewing and discussing literature, the course provides an understanding of Taiwan through its major writiers and works. The course focuses on Taiwan literature of the 1990s which was a time of change. Topics range from women's experience and gender writing; individual and collective memory; city literature; and travel writing. The course entails weekly readings of selected portions of Taiwanese literature followed by in-class discussion. Assessment: class participation and preparation, short papers, and a final report.

Course Description

This course examines the Cantonese language as spoken in Hong Kong. The language will be discussed in its areal and historical context. Grammatical topics will include parts of speech in Cantonese, verbal aspect, noun classifiers, and sentence-final particles, with a particular focus on aspects of syntax which diverge from written Chinese and Putonghua such as dative, passive, and comparative constructions. Topics of sociolinguistic interest such as the use of Cantonese as a written language, ‘lazy pronunciation,’ and Cantonese as an endangered language will also be addressed.

Course Description
This language course improves communication ability in spoken Chinese. There are about 15 students for each class. After this level of courses, the students have good paragraph expression ability, are able to communicate with local people in Chinese fluently about general topics on social life, and express their thoughts and feelings in Chinese systematically and completely. It requires students to speak Chinese in standard pronunciation and tones and to use words correctly. The students learn how to use complicated vocabulary and sentences patterns. The main goal of the course is strengthen students' ability in using Chinese language and appropriate expressions. 7000 words are learned by students. Text: Gaoji hanyu kouyu, 3 (Advanced Spoken Chinese Part 3) Peking University Press Assessment: class performance, two midterm exams, final exam.

Course Description

Taiwan is a rich and diverse country. This course combines language and culture, and covers various topics and situations about tourism and customs around Taiwan. The course strengthens language skills and vocabulary when recognizing famous attractions around Taiwan. After students complete this course, they will be able to correctly and fluently apply the appropriate vocabulary and sentences to real travel situations, such as buying tickets, booking hotels, asking for directions, and solving emergencies. In addition, they will also have a higher level of awareness in regards to the customs of the country.This course is taught mainly in Chinese.

Course Description
This course offers a general introduction for students to the literary history of China from the late Qing and Republican periods, to the current state of Chinese literature. It is conducted chronologically and organized according to certain themes. After looking at general issues, certain literary thoughts and the works of selected writers are examined. Breaking the traditional 1949 division, the literature produced in the second half of the twentieth century, and the important scholarship in the field of modern Chinese literature are introduced. Assessment: 60% coursework, 40% examination.

Course Description
This intensive course is intended for foreign learners who have completed CHIN9503 (3 semesters) or have attained an equivalent level of competency. It develops audio-lingual proficiency as well as raises reading and writing ability. Students can use information obtained from the course to converse on daily topics with Chinese people, and present short speeches based on the assigned topics. Emphasis is placed on everyday topics and common patterns so that students can experience communication in Chinese. Students learn to write 250 new characters on top of approximately 500 characters acquired at the previous level. Students should be able to recognize no less than 1400 Chinese characters accumulated through previous learning. Students are taught to write short compositions of about 350 characters. Assessment: workbook, compositions, quizzes, midterm exams, final exams.
