Course Description

This course strengthens Chinese listening, writing, and speaking skills and focuses on strengthening oral and expressive skills The course is designed for exchange students and visiting students only. The Chinese course is offered for those students who are taking Chinese course Intermediate I, II & III from NTU Center for International Education. The course aims to enable students to learn Chinese with joy through games and group activities. Except for improving students' listening, speaking, reading and writing skills, the course could help students further understand Taiwanese culture and language.

Course Description
This course explores China's encounters with the West from the seventh century to the early twentieth century. It presents a series of case studies on Sino-Western exchanges in the cultural domain. Major topics will be discussed through an interdisciplinary approach to bring together several fields in religion, philosophy, ethics, arts, and sciences. The course also offers a cross-cultural perspective that goes beyond the limitations of traditional Euro-centric and/or China-centered views. Assessment: 100% coursework.

Course Description
This course is intended for international students whose first language is not Chinese. It introduces the origins and evolution of Chinese characters; emphasizes formation and the structure of Chinese characters to break the puzzles of Chinese written form; presents distinctive features of the Chinese characters as a means to introduce the unique characteristics of the Chinese language and culture. The course teaches the writing skills to copy Chinese characters in correct stroke-order and the commonly used components of combined characters. The course teaches up to 220 Chinese characters and about 350 compound words. Students are taught how to use Chinese dictionaries in order to continue learning Chinese characters by themselves.

Course Description
This course begins with a systematic introduction to the basic theories in folk literature study, thus conducts a detailed analysis of the characteristics of folk literature, its functions and genres, and its relationship with written literature. In addition, various genres of folk literature are introduced with examples chosen from the most representative literary works in China. In this sense, this course is a basic introductory course as well as a selected reading course. Considering the performability and variety of Chinese story-telling and folk opera which may bring difficulty to class lectures, they are not introduced in detail, but instead are presented in the form of video. This course particularly focuses on folksongs and folktales, multimedia presentation are applied. Assessments: Midterm analysis paper 30%, final exam 50%, attendance and class performance 20%.

Course Description

This course is a continuation of Elementary Taiwanese Hakka I. It reinforces both Hakka literacy and spoken conversation. Conversation topics include: interpreting literature and documents; conducting research; critical appreciation and inquiry; communication and writing skills and creativity; language analysis abilities; analytical understanding and creative thinking in the humanistic study of Chinese language, literature and culture; global vision; and multicultural understanding. Course Description
This course develops communicative ability in Chinese at the elementary level. The course covers more than 500 words, 120 sentences, and basic grammar about daily life and work in China. It emphasizes Chinese phonetics, including all four tones, and basic conversational skills through topics such as shopping, public transportation, asking directions, family structure, banking, visiting the doctor, and renting an apartment. Course Description

This course covers the most prominent poems from the Tang dynasty looking at poem structure, syntax and rhyme. The significance of the poems is analyzed both in the context of past and modern eras. The course also covers new vocabulary words and sentence structures. Students will be given weekly homework assignments, a midterm exam and a final exam. The course is conducted in Chinese.

Course Description
An elementary course designed for students with no knowledge of the Chinese language. It covers the use of basic vocabulary and grammar points. Vocabulary is introduced based on everyday conversations and daily usage with a focus on appropriateness in application. Simplified Chinese characters are used in lessons. Course Description

Taiwanese is one of the most important language in Taiwan, it's also the ethnic language for most Taiwanese. This course is based on Elementary Taiwanese I, yet it's a non-intensive course for beginners. At the end of the course, students are expected to use Roman alphabets to spell Taiwanese, and students can read, write, speak and listen for daily use.
