Course Description
Dance Technique Extension 3 is designed to complement Dance Technique 4 through additional classes, which provide diverse approaches to training and exposure to industry professionals. Students take three dance technique extension classes each week, which serve to broaden the individuals’ experience. Students choose between two classes in contemporary dance technique and one in ballet or two classes in ballet and one in contemporary dance technique. Classes continue to focus on developing technical expertise and artistry.

Course Description

This course explores the basic skills of performing and expressing the meaning of songs through actions, as well as the settings in which they are performed. Students perform a complete bracket of kapa haka items in front of an audience consisting of a haka powhiri, waiata, action song, poi, and haka. Furthermore, students introduce each item; name the composer(s) and history of the item; and demonstrate the individual compositions, appropriateness in powhiri (ritual encounter of welcome), and knowledge of Maori protocols. The course also examines the Maori creation story, significant Polynesian ancestors, and constituent parts of the marae and wharenui.

Course Description
The course introduces students to the basic movements of West African dance, drumming, and singing. It offers practice of dance techniques based on selected traditional dances from various areas of Ghana and West Africa, with emphasis on style and musicality. The course also places emphasis on movement, technique, body awareness, placement, flexibility, and improvisation. Practical training in dance movements is accompanied by lectures on Ghanaian dances and related arts.

This course presents an in-depth study of contemporary dance practices through the choreography, creative facilitation, and techniques of contemporary dance makers. Students explore contemporary choreography practice and theory and create choreography that may be shared through film and/or live performances.
