Course Description
This course promotes knowledge and understanding of the modern, heterogeneous Swedish society through the study of education, culture, and lifestyles in Sweden. The cultural development in Sweden, including the development of the educational system during the last century, is introduced and discussed. The range of cultural patterns in different learning contexts (home, school, work, media, gender relations, intercultural settings) is described, analyzed, and compared. How does culture create meaning for the members of a society and how are values interpreted by immigrants and visitors? New conditions for learning and current concerns (equality, immigration, the European dimension, globalization and sustainable development) create new lifestyles, which are discussed within the framework of a multicultural society, with its current problems and possibilities.

Course Description

The International Internship course develops vital business skills employers are actively seeking in job candidates. This course is comprised of two parts: an internship, and a hybrid academic seminar. Students are placed in an internship within a sector related to their professional ambitions. The hybrid academic seminar, conducted both online and in-person, analyzes and evaluates the workplace culture and the daily working environment students experience. The course is divided into eight career readiness competency modules as set out by the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE), which guide the course’s learning objectives. During the academic seminar, students reflect weekly on their internship experience within the context of their host culture by comparing and contrasting their experiences with their global internship placement with that of their home culture. Students reflect on their experiences in their internship, the role they have played in the evolution of their experience in their internship placement, and the experiences of their peers in their internship placements. Students develop a greater awareness of their strengths relative to the career readiness competencies, the subtleties and complexities of integrating into a cross-cultural work environment, and how to build and maintain a career search portfolio.

Course Description
The last decade of the 20th century witnessed an expanding body of research on the changing concepts of childhood, drawing from various disciplines, including history, philosophy, education, the arts, literature, law, and medicine. This course examines the questions raised by this continuing body of research and relates them to current understandings of childhood and recent changes in policies regarding children in diverse local and international contexts. Topics include the Aries thesis, tabula rasa views of children, the developmental model of childhood, childhood innocence and responsibility, the Confucian child, the child as sexual being, the child as a spiritual being, the child as consumer, and the postmodern child as an active agent in the construction of his or her own identity. The course focuses on the different types of evidence used to substantiate claims about the nature of childhood, such as paintings, children's clothing, literature for and about children, educational institutions for children and research about children and childhood. The course examines The united Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child as a starting point for broad investigations into the changing nature of childhood and the universality of children's rights.
