This course examines the challenges of promoting and protecting human rights in Latin America, focusing on the most important analytical and empirical debates since the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948. It also analyzes transitional justice policies in processes of democratization and discusses the following questions: What is the nature of human rights abuses in Latin America? How have countries in the region responded to past abuses? What is the role of NGOs and regional and international institutions in promoting human rights? What are the best policies to promote and protect human rights in Latin America today?

This course provides a study of the history and development of mathematics, from its origins to the present. It is divided in two parts: mathematics through the 18th century (pre-Euclidean mathematics; Golden Age; second Alexandrian period; medieval mathematics; 16th century; the scientific revolution; development of calculation and mechanics in the 18th century), and mathematics of the last two centuries (from Gauss to the foundation of analysis; foundation of mathematics; Gödel theorems and computation; birth of modern algebra; geometrization of space in the 19th century; differential geometry and applications; algebraic geometry and applications; physical motivations of functional analysis).
