Course Description
This course analyzes the historical development of humanitarianism and human rights over the last two hundred and fifty years. It traces the emergence of the idea of humanity and its expression in the fundamental texts of the Atlantic Revolutions. The course includes a brief discussion on the rise of humanitarianism in the nineteenth century, the elaboration of the doctrine of human rights in the mid-twentieth century, its reformulation in the second half of the twentieth century and its growing importance in international relations, and in the way the relations between states and individuals is understood.

This course on neurobiological and cognitive aspects of addictions provides a study of the brain reinforcement system, drug classification, addiction, basic cognitive processes, and neuropsychology. It covers different drug groups together with their neurobiological and cognitive characteristics; the role of the nervous system in the addictive process; and the manner in which cognitive processes are affected by the addictive process.

This course is an exploration of Latin America, a world that includes Central and South America, from historical, geo-political, economic perspectives as well as through cultural ones to include food, music, gender, race, and class. The course seeks to come to an understanding of the experiences and processes that have shaped the region. It provides students with a global vision of the Latin American reality. Students reflect on identity, revolutions, nation state formation, modernization, and social mobilization based on analyses of primary sources such as cinema, music, literature, art, and historical documents, as well as secondary sources.
