This course enhances Spanish language skills, emphasizing academic skills needed for arguing, questioning, discussing, presenting, papers and more. The primary goal of this course is to enable students to attend and participate actively in classes conducted in Spanish.

This course explores major Spanish literary movements of the 18th and 19th century including the Enlightenment, neoclassicism, romanticism, realism, and naturalism. Each lecture is dedicated to the individual work of the following authors and their contribution to Spanish literature: Friar Feijoo, Ignacio Luzan, Leandro Fernandez de Moratin, Tomas de Iriarte, Felix Maria de Samaniego, Jose de Cadalso, Victor Hugo, Mariano Jose de Larra, Angel Saavedra, Jose de Espronceda, Jose de Zorilla, Juan Valera, Pedro Antonio de Alarcon, Perez Galdos, Leopoldo Alas, and Emilia Pardo Bazan. A focus is also placed on neoclassical fabulists, pre-romanticism, romantic Spanish poetry of the 19th century, and post-romanticism.

In this course, students learn to have basic conversations in Spanish using the present, past, and future tenses. The course includes the grammar, vocabulary, written expression and oral expression necessary for having a basic level of conversation.
