About The Program

Join UC students in Barcelona for an academic experience designed for business and economics majors. This program stands out for its partnership with Pompeu Fabra University (UPF), where you will take two customized courses alongside two courses at the Expanish school. This allows you to experience two distinct learning environments in the heart of the city while following a calendar tailored to the UC academic year. The curriculum emphasizes professional development through business and economics courses taught in English, with options for Spanish language study and academic internships with local organizations. During the spring semester, you can also gain practical work experience through an internship. Weekly activities and weekend excursions help you navigate Catalan culture, from exploring the Gothic Quarter to visiting the iconic Basilica de la Sagrada Familia. Whether you are analyzing market trends in a seminar or participating in a chocolate-and-churro tasting tour, the program balances academic focus with cultural discovery. Outside of class, comprehensive housing support and organized social events help you settle into life in one of the Mediterranean’s major economic hubs. The program welcomes students with sophomore standing and above, offering a path to gain international work experience and subject-specific knowledge in a global business setting.

Where you'll study

Pompeu Fabra University (UPF) is a young and modern university. Although small in size, it packs a big punch in rankings—of the 250 young institutions ranked by World University Rankings, UPF is number 11. It also continuously ranks in the top 10 institutions in Spain. Part of UPF’s strength is its passion for international exchange, collaboration, and research. Among the universities of Spain, UPF has the highest percentage of foreign students and lecturers. When you study abroad at UPF, you’ll be in the company of Spanish students who have either studied abroad already or will be soon. Over 30 percent of its local students spend at least one term abroad. The campus library is open 360 days a year and offers extended hours of operation during exams. In addition to its own impressive collection, UPF has an inter-library loan system that can access any university library in Catalonia within 24 hours. There are student computer rooms for use across UPF’s campuses as well as some 300 wireless hotspots.

WHERE YOU'LL STUDY

Courses for this program are held at Expanish, a modern and welcoming language school in Barcelona where the focus is on inspiring students to learn about the local culture and language. The school’s location is situated on a private street lined with stucco buildings and palm trees. The newly renovated school has eight spacious and wheelchair-accessible classrooms near public transportation. The school’s location makes it convenient to explore Barcelona’s neighborhoods and beaches as well as attractions such as Las Ramblas (a tree-lined pedestrian street with eateries, shops, and markets), the Gothic Quarter, and Plaça de Catalunya (a historic city square) while on breaks or after class. The school has free high-speed WiFi throughout and cozy common areas where students can study and catch up with friends between classes.

This internship connected directly to my major by giving me hands-on experience in creative storytelling. It taught me valuable skills beyond my degree that will be useful in the future—like filming in various locations and improving my editing skills. It’s given me a head start in building practical skills I’ll use in my career
