My semester in Singapore ended in tears over a giant smile of joy. All the rich experiences and so many feelings—I felt more alive and present than I had in a long time. As I write this, I hope it reaches someone with the desire to pursue study abroad and also the fear of leaving home and friends or missing out on internships and career opportunities. All of that is valid, but real-life experiences are the most important and life-altering. They push you toward growth and success, and the rest comes naturally.
My education at NUS allowed me to connect with renowned cultural studies faculty who wrote the books I had been studying in the months preceding my time in Singapore. Not only were they eager to support my research project, but they also provided essential support to refine my methodology and analysis, guided my research questions, and ultimately inspired my passion for Singaporean studies.
Studying abroad in Singapore was an experience beyond compare; it was the perfect backdrop for my academic pursuits. The opportunity to immerse myself in a melting pot of cultures, languages, and traditions was truly transformative. This experience not only expanded my academic horizons, but also enriched my cultural understanding in ways I never thought possible—every moment was a revelation.
My internship at NUS Forensic Science Laboratory was a boost to my college career and decision-maker of my future. Many students say it's difficult to know what to pursue, yet I believe the first step is to be proactive and I'm glad I took my shot. The challenges that confronted me helped me grow as an individual and the happiness I found throughout this journey made me more certain of becoming a forensic scientist.
Study abroad is full of serendipitous experiences. I went in not knowing what to expect and came out with more than I could have ever hoped for. I know I share this sentiment will all the other students.
Don't be afraid to explore "uncharted territory" because as much as we may be inclined to take the popular study abroad programs, there is so much value in learning about a world completely different from yours. Studying abroad not only exposes you to the culture and life of your host country, but also gives you a connection to an entire new region of the world.
