About The Program
Want to gain real-world experience as a bilingual health professional while exploring a beautiful Caribbean country? Spend six weeks in the lively city of Santiago, where you'll gain hands-on experience as a bilingual health professional. You'll also embark on a weeklong clinical rotation in a rural area and another in the bustling urban environment of Santo Domingo. Along the way, you'll pick up essential medical terminology in Spanish and learn how to connect with patients and medical staff in real clinical settings. By the end of your journey, you'll have a deeper understanding of health management, preventive medicine programs, and the challenges faced by underserved communities in the Dominican Republic. The DR is an ideal place to study abroad, blending rich cultural experiences with opportunities to make a real impact. When you're not in class or at your clinical placements, you can wander the cobblestone streets of Santo Domingo's historic colonial zone, soak up the sun on pristine beaches, or join in the infectious rhythms of merengue and bachata music that fills the air.
Where you'll study
The Pontificia Universidad Católica Madre y Maestra (PUCMM) is a private, nonprofit institution focused on scientific research. It teaches students to respond to social problems with solutions informed by ethical and humanistic principles. It has academic departments in social sciences, science and humanities, engineering, and health sciences on multiple campuses. While small, PUCCM offers the academic resources, support services, and facilities of a top-tier Latin American university. The campus preserves the topography and original beauty of the landscape with its colorful gardens and shaded walkways.
During the eight weeks of this program, you’ll spend most of your time taking courses at the Santiago campus and becoming familiar with the surrounding local community. Built into the program is a weeklong clinical rotation in a semi-rural area as well as an extended site visit in the capital, Santo Domingo.
