Millions of US citizens safely visit Mexico each year for study, tourism, and business, including more than 150,000 who cross the border every day. The Mexican government dedicates substantial resources to protect visitors to major tourist destinations, and there is no evidence that organized criminal groups have targeted US visitors or residents based on their nationality.
Travel Policy for UCEAP Students in Mexico
Staying safe and secure during UCEAP is a partnership with UCEAP and it requires all students to take personal responsibility for observing culturally appropriate behavior, exercising sound judgment, and abiding by UCEAP policies and procedures.
The UCEAP travel policy applies to specific regions in Mexico. UCEAP students found in violation of this prohibition may be dismissed. Due to the unpredictable nature of the situation in Mexico, students must check this warning often as it can change at a moment’s notice.
Students traveling to any area listed below while on UCEAP may be subject to dismissal. No exceptions are allowed.

- Durango
- Estado de Mexico
- Guerrero, including Acapulco
- Jalisco
- Michoacán
- Morelos
- Nayarit
- Nuevo León,including Monterrey
- San Luis de Potosí
- Sinaloa
- Sonora
- Tamaulipas
- Zacatecas
Travel beyond Mexico City to areas outside areas listed on this travel policy must be well considered and students must give itineraries and contact information to the UCEAP Study Center before travel.
The UC Study Center in Mexico City will monitor independent student travel within very circumscribed areas near the students’ current study locations. It is imperative for UCEAP students to understand the risks involved in travel to, and around Mexico, and to avoid dangerous situations at all times. UCEAP may dismiss any participant who travels to regions listed on this policy.
