Fields of Study: Social Sciences, Science

This program provides an immersive examination of global and public health issues as they affect Mexico. You will learn about barriers to health and health care in low resource settings, and how physical, social, and environmental aspects of community health are connected. You will also develop a better awareness of the relationships between health, human rights, and global inequities.  

In addition to the hands-on learning acquired through the practicum, the seminar allows you an opportunity to engage in critical reflection with your peers and demonstrate your understanding of the different perspectives of the people you encounter, and the challenges that arise when working within diverse economic, political, and cultural contexts. 

Unique study opportunities

  • Participate in a hands-on practicum in a village community not currently served by government aid.
  • Receive Spanish language training to help you interact with locals.
  • Fulfill multiple requirements for the UCEAP Peace Corps Prep program​.

Language

Language of Instruction: Spanish

Spanish Language Study: Required

All instruction is in Spanish. An additional language course, Spanish for Health, will help you interact with locals during the service portion of the program.

Requirements While Abroad

To successfully complete this program:

  • Take three courses for a total of 10.5 quarter/7.0 semester UC units.
  • All courses are graded P/NP only

  • Health and Community Practicum: Subject areas to be determined by agency and nature of work, upper division, 5 quarter/3.3 semester UC units (graded P/NP only)
  • Reflection Seminar: upper division, 3.5 quarter/2.3 semester UC units (graded P/NP only)

EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING

While independent research is an integral component of this program, additional or optional coursework, internships, and research for academic credit are not possible on this program.

Academic culture

Your practicum experience will be arranged by Child Family Health International (CFHI). The practicum involves about 20 hours per week working either in a service organization or in a clinic or hospital setting. CFHI will contact you before the beginning of the program in order to arrange the practicum placement.  

Grades

You will earn direct UC credit and grades for all coursework. Grades are typically reported to your UC campus by late September. Because grades may not be available for summer graduation deadlines, graduating seniors completing their participation in this program should consider planning for a fall graduation. Consult with an advisor on your campus to make sure about your graduation plans.
